It’s not all flashback, only about two-thirds of it. The rest is probably going to be just a _tad_ important for upcoming events.

Why you need flashback at all ? It ain’t so hard to rewatch parts you are missing/forgot.

The reason the first half of this episode is a flashback episode is because of many reasons. One, ALOT has happened, and it has been a good while since the previous episode. Two, It starts the second half of the anime, which, if you watch this episode to the end, and the bit after the ending, is going to even more insane than the first half
