I’m sorry to tell you people.. but mkv is a container, as is avi, and mp4.
The advantage you have with both mkv’s and mp4’s is that you can mux a subtitle stream too, and the player will show the subtitles too without the need to reencode the video stream with the subs rendered on it.
Re-rendering the video stream both loses quality and takes time, that’s why soft-subs are sometimes considered better. Only if you can play mp4s or mkvs.
In a slow pc, say, a pentium 1 mmx, even a p2, or a celeron, even a p3, perhaps, you may want to play a 1280×720 video, and only with fast and tiny players like tcpmp you will be able to achieve that. Players like tcpmp only support avi files.

Onto the quality issue.

You know.. the video stream is the same on both avi’s and mkvs/mp4s.. So if you encode an episode in XviD @ 300kbps, it will be the same size, and will have the same quality if you mux it in a avi or in a mkv or in a mp4. So please stop saying a mkv “eats” more cpu than an avi and so.
If you have an h264 avi @ 1920×1080 it will suck your cpu up as much as if it was an mkv or an mp4.

To make a cut …. Mkv -> Better Quality and bigger resolution with the same size (see old naruto ep before mkv small resolution 170 mb with hd res and 170 mb)
I needs 25~30% of my CPU (E6600 @ 3000/core)
And Avi -> good quality but lower res and takes 2~5% of my cpu

CCCP (funnywise the russian “TAG” of the SowjetUnion) is a must have.
Classik Media player is with that the best PLayer (performance)and VLC works also with CCCP.

Ahhh rmvb sucks

i don’t think that works, in fact, it might take more processing since the 1280×720 is being resized for each frame. it might actually be better to keep it at the resolution it is.

Get CCCP, then you can play mkv in windows media player without having to convert. and to get the subs too would mean you were encoding…which is not what you should be doing…)

Or, and now heres a crazy Idea for you linear thinkers, you can watch it in a smaller resolution. I know, its crazy. Drag the video from the standard HD size of 1280 x 720 to something smaller. The smaller the resolution, the less work your CPU needs to do.

ahahaha, just saying mkv > avi, that’s all but we at animetake will post avi’s for the shows that have it since we know that a portion of our users prefer the avi file for their own reasons
