Poor computers can’t handle .mkv files (h264). And h264 has better quality for sure.

exia Says:

yep better quality ftw.

contactus Says:

I must admit, it does look slightly better in .mkv, but if I’m doing ANYTHING else on my comp at the same time then the video lags and jumps like crazy. And I have a decent computer. I have CCCP and run everything through VLC, is there any particular reason that my .mkv’s are so jumpy?

Conspicuous Says:
August 20th, 2008 at 1:17 am

Contactus, the reason why when you play Mp4 files or MKV that most of the time have .h264 video codec in it causes your computer to lag up is because it uses a large amount of CPU power. You need to understand that anything in MKV or MP4 is most likely going to be HD quality.

The higher the resolution you play the video at, the more CPU power its going to need. So its best when you dont have a decent computer to play the videos in a resolution smaller than 1280 x 720

Gah forgot to say thanks :(

PhuzyBuny Says:

@contactus, you’re running CCCP through VLC?

VLC is a stand-alone multiformat/codec player and doesn’t require CCCP. You can play h264 files with VLC alone.

CCCP is intended for other players such as Windows Media Player or Windows Player Classic. Try just playing a h264 file from WMP and see if things get better. If not, try VLC by itself.

Personally, VLC is a piece of crap. CCCP ftw.

I think the solution you’re all looking for is purchasing a Mac! xD
I love my MacBook Pro.

i prefer mp4 or avi bcause i can burn it into dvd and play it trough my dvd player. i can watch it at tv. my dvd player only can support avi and mp4 format to play it. it was different if we watch at tv you know. if at computer screen it seem small and not fully enjoy it. :)

Avi files are the best… MKV is a crap file I’ve had quite afew problems with it and my computer is new and is fine… I’ve used VLC Player and it sucks now I’m using GOM Player.
So Avi is best then MP4 then Real Player files… MKV should die imo lol.
Thx for upload btw.

Veritas Says:
August 20th, 2008 at 4:36 am

avi should die imo, get updated people, avi is most likely worthless crap compared to mkv, lol. avi = old school.

Conspicuous Says:
August 20th, 2008 at 4:37 am

I use Media Player classic to play all of my media files. I just downloaded the kazaa lite codec pack (which is safe btw) and got the media player classic from there. Coincidentally, I have issues playing MP4 files lol.

mkv is by far superior to avi files. why do you think avi take so long to be released? cause they suck. The avi’s have to be encoded, fancy word for, place the subs directly into each frame. yeah, it takes time, it’s slow, and it’s stupid. ontop of that, to keep the file size small, most people cut the quality to SD, SD or Standard definition. Standard definition is that crap tv u have sitting at home with a huge ass black box, not pretty, in fact, it’s downright ugly, i think the resolution for that is something around 640×320…seriously…that’s really meant for like the 80s…

HD is the way to go, resolution reaching as high as 1280×720 for high quality anime (im sure it’s higher on some fancy HD files from blueray). sure avi can handle the high resolution but not the subs. to encode such a high quality version would take forever (you think it takes long to encode the 720×400 stuff….). mkv’s to the rescue.

remember your dvd player? yeah, that thing. that thing was awesome when it first came out, everyone got one cause it was THE thing to get for christmas, presents, whatever for families. playing around in the dvd menu, you found that you could, what’s this, TURN ON SUBS?! WOW!!! Soft subs is what this essentially is. mkv’s have soft subs and it’s easy. mkvs are actually related to the dvd style of videos but im not gonna go into that.

with soft subs, we dont have to encode. no encoding means, faster releases without compromising quality. however, with increased quality and soft subs means your computer, or player, or whatever u use to get your anime to your eyes, has to be able to handle all of this.

some older computers cannot take the HD, the h264, the 1280×720 resolution and so they lag. like some old man running the triathalon, it just doesnt work. no matter what you do, your piece of crap wont play it. you like your piece of crap, but still, it wont like you back. too bad. the only thing your piece of crap will handle are those low resolution, low quality, soon to be outdated, SD avi files…

do yourself a favour, get a better comp and start enjoying High Definition and not Shit Definition.

exia Says:
August 20th, 2008 at 8:13 am

i have a really old comp and it still plays mkv files no problem. i used to used vlc until i learned about ccp which made everything much easier. why do u think most major anime playing are presented in mkv before avi? imagine watching the new ep of code geass in a small resolution and crap quality.

tyriel Says:
August 20th, 2008 at 8:13 am

i know that… but still i have a favor to ask…

if anistash or someone release an .avi ….

please post it too ok…. ^^ thx for the attention^^

PhuzyBuny Says:
August 20th, 2008 at 9:45 am

ahahaha, just saying mkv > avi, that’s all but we at animetake will post avi’s for the shows that have it since we know that a portion of our users prefer the avi file for their own reasons

Hanabishi Says:
August 20th, 2008 at 10:01 am

I’m one that prefer avi too ’cause I don’t hav any video converter that can convert mkv
to avi with no sub losing 0.0+

Conspicuous Says:
August 20th, 2008 at 11:32 am

Or, and now heres a crazy Idea for you linear thinkers, you can watch it in a smaller resolution. I know, its crazy. Drag the video from the standard HD size of 1280 x 720 to something smaller. The smaller the resolution, the less work your CPU needs to do.

PhuzyBuny Says:
August 20th, 2008 at 12:36 pm

@Conspicuous
i don’t think that works, in fact, it might take more processing since the 1280×720 is being resized for each frame. it might actually be better to keep it at the resolution it is.

@Hanabishi
Get CCCP, then you can play mkv in windows media player without having to convert. and to get the subs too would mean you were encoding…which is not what you should be doing…)

To make a cut …. Mkv -> Better Quality and bigger resolution with the same size (see old naruto ep before mkv small resolution 170 mb with hd res and 170 mb)
I needs 25~30% of my CPU (E6600 @ 3000/core)
And Avi -> good quality but lower res and takes 2~5% of my cpu

CCCP (funnywise the russian “TAG” of the SowjetUnion) is a must have.
Classik Media player is with that the best PLayer (performance)and VLC works also with CCCP.

Ahhh rmvb sucks

rafaelinux Says:

I’m sorry to tell you people.. but mkv is a container, as is avi, and mp4.
The advantage you have with both mkv’s and mp4’s is that you can mux a subtitle stream too, and the player will show the subtitles too without the need to reencode the video stream with the subs rendered on it.
Re-rendering the video stream both loses quality and takes time, that’s why soft-subs are sometimes considered better. Only if you can play mp4s or mkvs.
In a slow pc, say, a pentium 1 mmx, even a p2, or a celeron, even a p3, perhaps, you may want to play a 1280×720 video, and only with fast and tiny players like tcpmp you will be able to achieve that. Players like tcpmp only support avi files.

Onto the quality issue.

You know.. the video stream is the same on both avi’s and mkvs/mp4s.. So if you encode an episode in XviD @ 300kbps, it will be the same size, and will have the same quality if you mux it in a avi or in a mkv or in a mp4. So please stop saying a mkv “eats” more cpu than an avi and so.
If you have an h264 avi @ 1920×1080 it will suck your cpu up as much as if it was an mkv or an mp4.

See ya~.
