Makoto Konna is a regular high school student who accidentally obtains an ability to “leap” through time. She first discovers her ability when she miraculously survives a train accident. Using her new found ability she begins to play with the limitless possibilities of time travel. Arriving to class on time, doing well on tests, are now all simple tasks for one who has the ability to travel back in time.

She is then confronted with a love confession from one of her close friends Chiaki Mamiya which she childishly avoids using her time leaping abilities. However her time leaps are restricted to a limited number of times and she eventually uses them all when avoiding Chiaki’s confessions becoming unable to rescue her other good friend Kosuke Tsuda and his girlfriend from an accident which kills them both.

Chiaki reveals the truth and the story unravels into a desperate race for Makoto to unveil her true feelings before it’s too late. Using his last time-charge, Chiaki reverses the incidents preceding Kosuke’s accident and this restores one of Makoto’s time charges. Using her last time charge, Makoto is finally able to talk to Chiaki about her feelings for him and likewise for Chiaki to Makoto.

I couldn’t give this movie any more praise than I already have; definitely one of my favourites without a doubt. The animation quality is spectacular from Madhouse; the fluid movements, the lively, bright and intricate backgrounds are stunning on their own, a masterpiece that the artists should be proud of. Character development is spectacular as the writers create a stunningly real teenage environment; school, bullying, and most importantly, the awkward first relationships. Oku Hanako’s contribution to this movie is wonderfully addicting. A bit of science fiction, a bit of romance, a bit of comedy, and a lot of phuzy-awesomeness! Watch, enjoy, fall in love.
