I can’t claim to be able to explain why it was so popular, but I know why -I- liked it.

First, good characters:

Start with a male lead that I don’t want to kill within 5 minutes of the opening sequence (neither the 1-brain-cell “I must be the best”/”never give up” Naruto type, nor the hapless loser about-to-get-a-harem type). Kyon has a sarcastic wit and a jaded view on life, with just a touch of humor and not-quite-dead hopefulness about the world at large that I -never- see in male leads in other shows.

Add the quiet, bookish girl. Not shy, nor embarrassed, nor clumsy, but in fact intelligent, competent and powerful. Doesn’t have a lot to say simply because there isn’t a need to. Personally, people who constantly talk just to hear themselves talk get on my nerves. Television being the medium it is, that tends to be the sort of person most often seen. You almost never see characters who have a ‘presence’ without being forced to constantly talk, and having such a person here strongly resonated with me.

Toss in the enthusiastic cheerful girl who can see the humor in life’s little stupidities and isn’t afraid to laugh at them. Not a cheerful ‘genki’ girl who’s always trying to put up a positive front and make everyone else feel good (usually want to strangle those types), but just someone who is genuinely enjoying herself.

And for good measure, the smarmy, knows-too-much-for-his-own-good ‘Yes’-man, who, despite having many traits that other shows would treat as character flaws, is actually a fairly likable guy.

Kyon, Yuki, Tsuruya and Itsuki are the reasons I fell in love with the show. Haruhi I don’t so much like, as recognize as a strong central catalyst to keep the world from being boring. Mikuru is the only character I have a tendency to dislike, because she encompasses all those character traits from moe-blob shows that drive me nuts. Still, she’s not bad as a sidekick character.

Second, good animation. Despite poor animation not correlating with a poor quality show, or vice versa, good animation still makes the show easier to watch and appreciate.

Third: The final moments of the last episode of the main arc (I’ll assume that since you’re reading this thread that spoilers are not an issue) where Kyon decides that it’s time he told Haruhi about what was going on around her. Making the rational/logical decision there, not treating Haruhi as a child that had to be protected from the truth (despite warnings from the other club members), and just laying it out is so counter to the typical way anime stories handle that issue, it’s refreshing. (Not that she believed him, but that’s another issue entirely.)

And that’s possibly the main thing. People behaving like real people (despite individual peculiarities), and not children or anime tropes. The “Haruhi as God” meme is fun to go along with, but is really only peripheral to the actual enjoyment of the show.

The links in the download section are NOT in chronological order. They are exactly how they aired in 2006, which was NOT in chronological order.
The difference with the links in the download section is that there is no episode 0 – which was a troll, and they are in 720p.
About this episode 8, the raws for it are bad so there is no HQ as of now. Groups will probably re-do it when better raws come out.

What does it mean by LQ?

Does that just mean its only 480p and not 720p? or its worse then a 480p/i encode? or does it mean the subs arn’t that great? (although CoalGuys and GG usually do great speedsubs?)

Meh farrrrr out. is it really that hard to understand. The previous airing missed some episodes.. This season is going to air the previous 14 episodes, and 14 more, all in chronological order. Episodes 1-7 are in the anime download section.

The first 7 episodes were already in the first season. It’s up to you if you want to download and rewatch.

Haruhi is based on novels, not anime. Right now the story is taking the episodes from season1, and them taking the stories from the novels that fit during season1 but weren’t animated for the first season, and putting them in where they fall chronologically.

I’d honestly suggest rewatching the whole first season.

I have to point out that among the three releases compared above, Mazui’s translations are the best overall and most representative of the original work, despite a few QC issues here and there in its release. I was hoping that Mazui would issue a v3, but that hasn’t happened yet.

The well-known a.f.k group has published its release, too, but unfortunately it uses the AVI container (instead of MKV, which would allow softsubs) and is encoded in XviD (instead of H.264).

Coalgirls uses ordered chapters for this series, so I’ve dropped its release right off the bat. (I consider the usage of ordered chapters to be grossly offensive, inconsiderate, and disrespectful to the production staff.)

Sushi’s v2 release does not use ordered chapters, so I will probably check it out, along with a few other groups’ releases, if time permits.

One more note on a.f.k.’s release: Source material is modified/erased when each character’s tanzaku (wish cards) are shown. This is a big no-no.

What in god’s name is wrong with you? I don’t think I could come up with reasoning for this if you let me think it over for a few hundred years.

While our numbers may be in the minority, some of us can read kanji and actually care about the end credits in each individual episode. I am sure that you are aware of the importance of politeness and respect in the Japanese culture, too, Booyadude :)

I don’t think that either of us is wrong. We simply have a difference of opinion when it comes to ordered chapters, that’s all.

Its episode 7 because just as in season 1, all haruhi episodes were aired in complete random order not because some other 7 episodes were aired before. Animetake put them up as episode 1 as in chronological order. For the more thick minds… earliest events in time first. So this is basically the start of the new season.

OOh btw problems with the stupid vids. Playing along then the video slows down, as in just the visuals, so the audio still plays at normal rate and then u get a lapse in the video and this gap between synchronisation of audio and video grows wider and wider until by the end of the video the audio is at least 1 minute ahead.
