You don’t see them posted often because Mazui is good enough, and SFW is usually a day or so slower. Obviously I can’t tell you who’s translation is better, but I can at least say that SFW offers the best encode for the series. Aside from that, you’re free to wait for whoever you want, but I’m quite content that they’ve released first.

I have downloaded and watched Nirei, SFW, Mazui, ASR and Frostii subbed Spice and Wolf episode 1. I did not find anything distinctly distinguishable among them, both in terms of quality and subtitles. However, I do remember one of them subbed it Holo not Horo.
My advice would be to stick with Mazui. Early release and good qaulity!
Actually, which one is correct? (Japanese does not have ‘l’)

I have always been puzzled with various subbed versions of the same anime episode with same quality but of different sizes?

“Encode” means the way in which the video was encoded. When I say they offer the best, I mean their video quality is the best. As I told you in the episode 5 comments, SFW offers the best encode, followed by Mazui and Frostii, and the others are too bad to mention really.

Oh, and Holo is the officially localized name, as well as what she writes it as. Of course none of that matters since her name is Horo and nothing else.

@ Booyadude: Can you please tell me how to find out which one has the best quality? Is it by the total bit rate, frame rate, codec, anything of that sort, or just by simply watching? It would be really helpful.

reziak17: I judged the quality based on things like how much detail was left in the encode, and how sharp(blurry is bad, and so is oversharpening) it was. It was pretty easy to tell 2 or 3 seconds in, since a lot of them had encoded/filtered it badly enough to destroy simple things like the lines on the wagon.

@ reziak17 Seriously i would say Nire subs the best for this series. Out of the three i would say SFW(Haven,t worried with Frosti yet).

man this was a very good episode and good to see Lawrence back on horo’s good side :D he he he kinda funny how Lawrence really does want horo to “play” with him =^.^=
