Since the value of entertainment is defined through subjective opinion, calling something overrated is an oxymoron.

KING 47 Says:
September 15th, 2013 at 1:24 am

You are very right. The show is extremely over rated. The animation is shit, the characters are also shit, and the story is wasted. They could have done much more with it. The music is good though, except for OP2.
I wouldn’t watch it if it wasn’t on the weekend and if this season was any better.

@KING 47:
Are you trolling?
If you’re not, then I’m honestly curious about your anime preference.
Would you name some anime that you think is way better than AoT?

dekopon Says:
September 15th, 2013 at 1:49 am

He’s trolling, just trying to get attention.

There needs to be more anime like AoT, instead of the usual moe sparkly bullshit.

Ohmislaw Says:
September 15th, 2013 at 4:02 am

This anime is…average. I dont think King 47 is trolling, many many people don’t like this anime and I can see why. The pacing is shit, even in the manga, plot holes are solved as an afterthought and characters are shallow for the most part. Still, it’s got a lot of novelty in its stylization and the giants stomping people while running like mindless retards gives me a good laugh.

KING 47 Says:
September 15th, 2013 at 4:26 am

Thank you.
I will give credit where it’s due. I like the thick outline style and the city designs, but the poor animations, especially the overused still images, take away from that. Though they did improve on it from the beginning of the show, it does not improve too much. The story is all over the place. And the monotone characters, especially Eren, hurt the story. They don’t have any good characters in this show.
The way characters scream and act like they are hurt is so poorly executed.

I will say as poor of a story as they this story has, it did not waste a lot of time. Many shows start with the premise and a quick buildup and then stagnate for a very long time before picking up right before they end, but this show didn’t do that. But that didn’t save it. At the very least they didn’t fill it with loli characters, fan service, or incest (like SAO).

I didn’t see the manga btw, I’m only speaking about the anime.

^ Well, if you say that kind of criticism but can’t at least mention what anime is better than AoT, then I consider you a troll.

Ethriost Says:
September 15th, 2013 at 4:36 am

Sorry, I was talking to KING 47 and Ohmislaw

dekopon Says:
September 15th, 2013 at 4:50 am

The pacing isn’t shit. It’s extremely fast paced, in a good way. It keeps the tension rising instead of letting it get stale and boring. With a story like this, you don’t want slow movement, it doesn’t suit the theme of the story and the setting where humans are ready to be eaten at any point. Plot holes are sometimes revealed as afterthoughts yes and that does annoy me but that’s only sometimes, everything else is introduced well.
The characters are not shallow. For example, Mikasa is such a well grounded character, she has reason to fight, someone to protect and to live for. She’s intelligent and strong.

@King 47

The thick outlines I’m not actually fond of, it seems to contrast with the inner details of the art and the characters. The animation isn’t entirely poor at all. I have not seen an action sequence that is animated poorly, the animation is merely lacking in dialogue driven scenes, where it doesn’t matter as much. The animators only have a certain amount of time per week after all. How is the story all over the place? It’s quite linear in fact. The actors can’t scream well? I think Eren’s voice actor does a great job. I’ve heard far worse acting anyway.

I’d say the attention this show is getting is probably distracting the attention away from your favourite shows, thus making you bitter and wanting to publicly criticise it so other people will have the same mindset as you.

keke12 Says:

So Armin already know who the female titan in the first place. Maybe in the next episode, we are going to know how he figure it out.

makky Says:
September 15th, 2013 at 5:00 am

Give him a break friend. It’s quite obvious he’s not a troll. He at least gave reasons for why he dislikes it and stated some of what he liked so I can respect it. I like AoT because it’s entertaining and the setting is unique to me but of course there’s some people who hate it for different reasons.

It’s quite obvious that a lot of people enjoy it more judging by how popular it is and the overall reception in sites like MAL where people can vote on the rating. With every anime that’s popular, of course there’s going to be people who dislike it to grow in proportion. It’s more accurate to say a vocal few hate this anime which can be a lot of people considering the popularity of it.

This anime is awesome.

KING 47 Says:
September 15th, 2013 at 5:06 am

I don’t know why, but I think the thick outlines work for this show. I don’t want to see them popup in every other show though. Perhaps it’s a thing I associate with the show. The action animations aren’t bad, but the rest aren’t that good. As I said, they improved. In the beginning it was very annoying when they put lots of still images, but they aren’t the best. I understand budget and time limitations.
Rarely do you ever see an anime with an excellent story start to finish, they always fall short. And often when they do them well, they either drag or rush through it. This show built too much and fell short for me.
The reason I am bitter is not because distracting the attention from my favourite (I wrote it with a u like I used to) show. Frankly, I don’t have a fav show this season. I’ve been waiting on Kyoani to give us more Hyouka, you know all about Free I assume. The reason I am bitter is because this show has so much potential and it was wasted on poor execution from too many points. I want it to be more, but it is not.

As for the screaming, it’s the worst in the show. I’d rather watch a 24 minute still image than watch more of the AoT screaming. They want to convey emotions with the screaming and it’s nothing but utmost annoyance. I’ve seen shows with worse voice acting as well. The voice acting in this show is good except for the screaming. And when they do the lines for the shadowing when they scream, that makes it even worse.

Is the manga done? Or is this show another one of those never ending shows? Like Naruto and such.

Korsakoff Says:
September 15th, 2013 at 5:54 am

I don’t really know but from what I see in other animes, the number of frames used in an animation is obviously the one most affected by budget constraints. You’ll see how that played out in evangelion (90’s series). An animation with so much frame and movement is a premium and nowadays only companies like Kyo-Ani can do that much. From what I can see here in Kyojin, they sacrifice animation in most scenes to give the best in crucial moments like when they’re in the maneuver gear, and on battle scenes. In short, all the frames went to the fight scenes so it’s not entirely surprising that SnK has a lot of still images. And that’s apart from the fact that they are running for more than 1 season. Tbh, the show did well in delivering a consistent animation. Compare that to all the seasons of Naruto which occasionally drops in quality and consistency when it comes to animation and you’ll see what a bad animation actually is.

SnK’s thick outline is indeed a turnoff though. Personally, since I’m an (amateur) animator myself, I’d only ever be forced to use that kind of animation if I’m using programs with difficult to use vector/line art tools like photoshop, where it takes ages to make a picture (I usually draw on SAI). The usual trend in animation nowadays makes use of a lot of vectors (rather than raster images and scanned drawings) since it’s faster to produce and easier to manipulate/animate. Take a look at how consistent the monogatari series is and realize the benefits of vectors. In SnK, the vector techniques are a bit sloppy tbh, and it contributes to how stiff the character looks occasionally. But then again, as I have said, it was still good and consistent overall.

I couldn’t wait after last weeks ep and began reading it…. Its gonna be awesome.

Ohmislaw Says:
September 15th, 2013 at 6:22 am

Pacing isn’t always about speed. My gripe is mostly about how elements of the SnK world are introduced. It feels force fed, even the author admitted rushing things(I’ll try to find source but it dates a bit) and being caught by surprise by the manga’s popularity.
Mikasa is a good character; strong females that aren’t overly used for the wrong reasons are rare and it definitely is a quality of the show. But the rest of the crew are a walking bunch of anime archetypes with nothing special.

It’s a good show but I’m just saying that there is a lot of powder thrown into the watcher’s eyes.

And hey, it’s only an opinion but you wanted it, a better show than SnK/AoT to me would be Cowboy Bepop just to name one.

Razgrizdemon Says:
September 15th, 2013 at 6:52 am

Totally broke down and just read through the entire manga, there are some great turns and twists, but I stil don’t like Eren or Armin. And I can’t believe what I’m about to type but, I’m starting to dislike Mikasa, she’s overly attached like a child. I KNOW Eren saved your live, but considering the amount of times that you’ve saved his I can’t say the debt hasn’t be repaid ten fold. At this point she seems like a psychotic ex girlfriend who can’t let go. Not to mention the fact that Eren doesn’t seem to pay her any kind of significant interest, like, at all. I, for some reason, always root for the “villains”, I guess it’s because life isn’t all good and evil, with good always winning. So, I don’t mind if “evil” wins from time to time, even if only to test the goodness in people. But, what I’m seeing is nothing, just a bunch of questions with far away answers, this has to do with a lack of ability in story telling. There are too many questions for me right now, which makes me think that the creators are going to end up having to rush a bunch of answers at us, and when you do that you run the risk of putting out bad content, it may make sense, but just barely. I’m so hooked on this show/manga that that outcome would be devistating to me. I don’t know how long this series will go on, but I can say that it will take a while to fully resolve all of the questions that constantly seem to pop up for. Hopefully things are handled properly.

DAT cliffhanger is just too much, as it got me totally unaware… Maybe I’ll read the manga, damn, this show is so friggin good…
@Razgrizdemon: I think Mikasa is so attached to Eren because she’s almost a child, we often forget that most of characters are teens at best, and she believes that if she loses Eren she will lose everything in this world and thus she would have no reason to live. At least thats what it seems to her and I dont dislike that, it would be boring if she were a perfect character, imo…
