I cry when I see CR subs… Their blatant simplification and Americanization is painful to watch.

My main worry is that it will kill off fansubbers as more people continue to watch ‘official’ CR subs, unaware of the quality.

Sure it might be ‘professionally’ subbed, but at least keep the meaning true to the original! CR’s last season subs left a terrible taste in my mouth.

Crunchyroll doesn’t sub its stuff, it uses what it’s given, so it greatly varies, but rarely are the translations bad, mediocre? yes, but bad? no.

Correction, CR subs are horrendous.

…but that depends on which school of Subbing you subscribe to: Liberal or Literal Subtitles.

Liberal subs (like those of CR) tend to simplify and Americanize with the intent to make the show more accessible to casual fans.

Literal subs retain the essence of the original Japanese dialogue while making foreigners able to understand what they are saying.

I and many Anime fans don’t like liberal subs as they tend to remove all nuances of the Japanese Language that makes Anime unique. Anime is a Japanese product and those who watch Anime should at least make an effort to try and learn something about the culture which their Anime comes from. It’s only fair.

Seriously, on the topic of honorifics, will a -chan overload the brain of a casual watcher? Will a joke that is a play on Japanese words boggle their minds and turn off the casual Anime watcher?

Case in point, numerous simplification of Japanese terms and grammatical mistakes in Nogizaka Haruka Season 2 and a complete mis-translation of a joke that has to do with a play on Japanese words in Sora no Otoshimono.

It’s as bad as blatant censorship. Or worse.

I can live with the so-called “liberal subs”. The problem is that CR doesn’t even do those well, and the fact that I’ve been catching numerous mistranslations in their subs even with my less-than-fluent knowledge of the language says something about their quality. Not to mention the bad typesetting and the fact that you actually have to pay if you want your anime look better than youtube videos. It’s really a travesty to ask money for that kind of shoddy work.

Synopsis:

Seven years ago, Amakawa Yuuto’s parents died leaving him living alone without a single relative. A cat spirit-samurai girl and demon huntress who, aside from wanting to copulate with him madly, swears to protect Yuuto. @Actar For what it’s worth (and I’m sure it is not much, but anyway) I have to say, I agree 100% with you. I can’t even understand how some people want to see/play something from a different culture without any interest at all in the culture that created those medias. You don’t have to become a so called “weaboo” (sp?), this applies to all cultures. If you are into Korean Dramas, wouldn’t you want to know more about Korean norms, society and culture? At least a little? I would think so. And regarding japanese honorifics, you loose so much info about interpersonal relationships by cutting them from the translation, where instead by leaving them in, it shouldn’t bother even the people who don’t care about it (they can just ignore them).

(I’m a non native english speaker, so sorry if I made any stupid grammar mistakes)
