Rai, I’m going to have to disagree with you here. It’s an anime, and there are tons out there that you can watch in place of this one. Hell, you haven’t even watched the first episode (or maybe you have, and even then, it’s only the first episode) so it’s impossible for you to give a good critique of the anime.

Will the dialogue be well written? What issues will it address? etc etc etc.

With your argument, that’s like saying all of us human beings look at ourselves in the morning and realize we can’t do alchemy, so why should I be watching an anime that talks about alchemy because it has nothing to do with what I am or what I am capable of doing. Oh right, anime is a medium that allows for these issues and imaginations to run wild and shed light on some sensitive ones as well.

So cut some people here a slack and give the anime a chance. If not, then just don’t watch it, but you don’t need to go around telling everyone off that they’re all “ignorant”. Doing that just makes yourself look ignorant.

Dudes, the negativity against this show has nothing to do with being insecure, but with the mangakas/producers and what not making lame ass stories about people and their problems that nobody a interest for, that said I haven’t watched this so I wait for further judgement after I downloaded it.

The art in this one was beautiful. The story wasnt much to my liking though. But I guess it concerns an important subject. I like the girl in the boys uniform =)

The Directors/writers must be desperate for anime ideals or they got some guts to put and anime that talk about those issue. Those issue are highly personal and can be scrutinized in many ways. I watched it this anime it way to conversal to fast. They so slowly introduced these issue throughout the series.

LOL It’s like Ranma for the 21st century.

Jokes aside, while it’s not something I’m looking to watch, it shows not all anime are cookie cutter retreads.

I absolutely agree with you! Without “To Love-Ru” how would we deal with being forced to marry space princess. “Ore no Imouto” teaches you how to deal with your sisters tsundere lust for her brother. And havent we all had been forced into at least on Grail War or two. Seeing as how transgered people face no challeges in life any anime/manga that expresses such themes is irrelevent to society at large where we strugle each day to keep our names and faces away from Kira.

now this is actually a really good anime it deals with problems that most of us never will face (gender identity) and problems we all go trough (puberty) growing up. and sorry to disappoint you all but this a lot more than trap anime. this kind of demographic is more for the mature open minded viewer so if your expecting to see some shitty anime filled with fan service and girls with humongous boobs this anime is not for you

well I watched the first episode. It was interesting. But I’m not going to judge this show after just watching the first episode. But I had a very good first impression of this show so far. I don’t know if I’m going to watch it every week. But I definitly going to watch some more of Hourou Musuko

I watched this giving it a chance like I did Kuragehime since I enjoyed every single bit of Kuragehime.

This show is just plain confusing. It starts you off assuming that you’ll know everyone’s name right off the bat with one introduction. Then it tells of past events without flashbacks to further confuse me.

Also, the anime is incredibly shiny, which is usually reserved for dream sequences, so unless this whole anime is a dream, it’s breaking some rules.

Still gonna watch it, hopefully it picks up better next episode.

Yeah, I don’t know what to think about this yet honestly. Maybe a second episode will help me understand the story better. I was sort of lost and reading these comments definitely didn’t help clear anything up lol. I’m not really complaining about the storyline’s concept, but the plot delivery was meek, just left me scratching my head.

Hmm. I think it’s interesting and accurate. It’s fun to try and understand different people’s perspectives in this world.

GID (gender identity disorder) is a pretty serious issue. And it’s not something a person can run away from. If some of the “manly” homophobic posters ever have a kid like that, I’d feel really sorry for that kid.

This anime illustrates the emotional hardship of dealing with this issue socially. If you don’t like that concept, stop b1tching and watch something else. :)

At first I didn’t think I would like this anime, cause I am not particularly interested in this sort of issue. But, you know what, it was quite good. Confusing at first though, but good enough to watch more episodes!!

After watching this I started to read the comments, and I got really disappointed with the prejudice of some people here… It is not about being insecure or ignorant… it is about respect. People are different, think different and not everybody goes through the same experiences…

It is not at all necessary to be so disrespectful about this anime. It is ok to not want to watch because you are not interested on the subject, but there is no need to offend people.

Open up your eyes and see that the world is no longer black and white. Things are not so simple as they appear for some people. Instead of offending them for being different, try to help, or at least back off. We don’t need any more hate in this world!

Darn, that’s a lot of comments, well man the Art it’s simply amazing, awesome. The History it’s kind of slow, but reflect the conflicted mind of the principal characters, regardless the anime only give you some hints on this 1st episode, you can get on your own conclusions.

I enjoyed Kuragehime, but this one it’s completely different. Let’s give it a try.

I read the manga for a while. It’s fine for a few chapters, but after a while it becomes surreal and outright disgusting. It’s not a realistic portrayal of gender insecurity, so its just a retarded misinterpretation. Watch it for the art but don’t start thinking the plot has some meaning or insight to it.

those who bitch about this are not afraid of people with gender confusion. Im pretty sure theyre more afraid of the ideas things like this might give to some people. People who are normal otherwise, but who are easily affected. Nobody knows really how this affects the human mind.

omg this about sexual identity not sexual orientation surprisingly it is not even stated in the manga that the kids are gay the boy even starts dating a girl and is in love with the girl who wants to be a boy. and this more of a seinen/josei anime if your squeamish about this subject don’t watch this.

One of my favorite manga of all time; very pleased to see this animed. It’s so much more intricate and mature than all of the “lololol trap animu!” comments that are filling this page.

A lovely beginning, art-wise and story-wise. This anime stands out from the usual pack of shiny action/mecha/moe-driven shows that come out every season. This is a slice of life show in the truest sense. The director also apparently took great pains to keep the style of the anime as close to the style of the manga as possible. The names of a lot of characters are thrown at you in the beginning, but I get the feeling any confusion will be cleared up later.

There seem to be a lot of people who misunderstand the theme of this show. It’s about discovering one’s own sexuality, but it’s also about the love affair Japan has had with androgyny since Okuni of Izumo invented Kabuki. At the same time, Horou Musuko’s characters weren’t created for the same reason characters like Hideyoshi from Baka Test or Pico from Boku no Pico were created. This story is a study of gender identity and growing up in a very honest, un-exploitive way.

Well it was pretty down to earth.
Same art style as Aoi Hana I think.
It was not generic at least.
Shounen Ai should be in the genres on MAL :P
One need an open mind at least.

Genre? This is definietly slice of life. This is good anime the song is good too.

You know, I’d like to be all accepting and whatnot, but honestly, the premise itself doesn’t really interest me. That being said, I’m one of those people who harps on the lack of originality in everything these days. Thusly, I’m going to give this a shot. I’m betting I’ll finish it.
