Comments were disabled for the past 7 weeks because I wanted to prevent further shit storms similar to what happened on the Episode 1 post.
Hopefully after 8 weeks there won’t be people who don’t even watch the show commenting nonsense.

August 28th, 2013 at 7:32 pm
Hyouka was better. ‘Nuff said.
August 28th, 2013 at 7:42 pm
^thats like.. just your opinion man.
August 28th, 2013 at 7:47 pm
No, just kidding. It’s a pretty okay show. Kyoani’s next show seems more intersting. And then we get Chuu2 movie and second season. Winning!!
Hopefully Hyouka S2 or OVA next.
August 28th, 2013 at 7:48 pm
Hyouka was the best!
August 28th, 2013 at 7:52 pm
I loved Hyouka, but of course that was the novels first before the anime. But when KyoAni did Hyouka it just made it even better. :3

Thx for the episode, the show is pretty good, and even if people troll and shitpost it’s best not to engage them and start flaming wars, just ignore them and they will most likely stop. Not worth removing the comments because of some people trolling and shitposting…

I don’t mind the show. It’s not bad.
What I mind is censorship. While I do appreciate all the work you do Dao, I don’t appreciate you forcing what you believe to be right and wrong on others. And when you don’t get that you disable the comments. Really?
Learn there are other opinions aside from yours in this world. Some of them you will not agree with. However when you resort to preventing those from being aired freely, another words censorship, you demean yourself and this web site.

i understand what your are saying frist when episode 1 came out everybody talked trash about this anime so i didnt want to watch it unless i saw many friend of mine watch this to and they where recommending this to me.
and i was like wow … i like this anime xD
i dont know why people talked trash about this anime

@digritz, Let me rephrase my first statement. I disabled comments not because I was fed up with what others had to say about the show but mainly because there was a lot of controversy regarding the whole “gay” subject. In Episode 1’s post a majority of the arguments that went on wasn’t between me and another person, a lot of the times it was other members attacking each other.
I know there are other opinions besides mine, I respect others opinions and I have NOTHING against people who believe this show is for gays HOWEVER when it gets to the point where people are calling others “gay” because they enjoy the show, there’s definitely something wrong with that and it’s not even considered an opinion anymore. It’s more of attacking someone and being really fucking immature.
In conclusion, I didn’t disable comments because I was tired of reading peoples “opinions” I was tired of the shit storm that was caused by members arguing with other members over the whole “gay” controversy. Yes, I might’ve gotten a bit mad myself at people who made those comments but when a comment section becomes a war zone between members disagreeing with each other, I’d rather not have any of it said at all.
Oh and I was never “forcing” others to believe what I thought was right. I was in my own way, expressing my opinion on how a lot of the comments on the first episode post was wrong, of course in my opinion. Just so you know, out of roughly 10-15 people who posted homophobic slurs, I only banned 3 of them because ONLY 3 of them went out of their way to step to the next level where as they attacked other members who said they liked the show.
Next time you call me out for something you aren’t even sure about, at least ask in a nicer tone instead of forcing yourself to believe that the reason why I disabled comments was because I was “forcing others to believe what I believe was right and because I didn’t get that, I disabled the comments”.

I concur with Dao. About the anime, i had high expectation for this show. But its … i´d say lame but not… I mean, i like the animation, music and characters. But the plot?? i mean it reminds me of plot plot plot funnymamas version hahahahaha. Where the hell is the plot, if it´s gonna be 12 eps it´s too short for so many things happening right now (new member, girl, friendship, rivalry, competition, training…) well, whatever, it seems there is always this kind of show…

Comments are back, this show is going to be over soon.

thank you :)

I kinda agree that the plot here is pretty weak. I take it as Kyoani’s way of experimenting on something they haven’t done before, and they’re pretty successful on it considering how my little sister insists on me downloading this regularly lol.
This is definitely not for everyone, and I know a lot of guys who’d find this anime a bit too weird for their tastes. I mean, it contains a lot of metrosexuality (which is more about lifestyle than gender actually) and stuff which girls would love. But hey, on a side-note, Kyokai no Kanata is coming this October, and chuu2 has already been announced iirc so we’ll all have our cup of tea.

Omg, this show is so gay.
There, I got it out of my system. I’m happy now. :)
August 29th, 2013 at 2:30 am
Sure the plot is weak. And I don’t mean to defend this show because you do have a point.
But honestly speaking, most 12 episode anime shows are wasted potential, to some extent.
First episode starts with the main protagonist, the premise, and at the end they show the major plot point (e.g. the bad guy). The next few episode they introduce new characters one by one in a clichefest manner. Then a few unnecessary episodes, sometimes a beach episode or other fanservice. And when there are two or three episodes left the story picks up and usually doesn’t conclude well. It almost always happens, their pacing is very bad. I know it’s not all the time.
But we’ll see how this ends up.
Dao, are the Hyouka novels any good? Are they officially translated?
August 29th, 2013 at 2:35 am
I agree the plot is weak. I still love this show tho. It made my day again ;w;
August 29th, 2013 at 3:26 am
wow! thanks! LA, California is hot as hell, and this show bring me a kind of refresh lol. Lets enjoy this ep with a cool drink :3
August 29th, 2013 at 4:02 am
@Korsakoff If only more people like you existed during the first episode post… I wouldn’t have gone through hell that day. I also do agree with you, I’m not too into the series but it’s definitely not bad & I can see why a few others don’t like it. I’m also excited for Kyokai no Kanata and also chuu2koi2 cause Mori Summer is <3.
@KING47 The novels are really good but if you’ve seen the anime already you probably wouldn’t want to read the novels at least the first 4 volumes that is. The novels is up to Volume 5 and only 1-3 has been officially translated by BakaTsuki so far, the 5th volume has a bit of new stuff that the anime didn’t animate but it’s nothing major.
August 29th, 2013 at 4:06 am
@Dao, you shouldn’t expect more from the internet. I’m sure you know what kind of people reside there.
I wouldn’t mind reading them. I would like to buy them though. I know they haven’t animated the whole material though, that’s why I am hopeful.

Can someone explain to me why this show is called Free anyhow? I don’t watch it so I have no idea, but how does swimming and the word free come into place. Oh yeah nothing against this show, just not to my tastes.
August 29th, 2013 at 6:20 am
Gay anime is gay.
August 29th, 2013 at 6:48 am
It’s called Free as in Freestyle, because the main guy always says “I only swim freestyle”
August 29th, 2013 at 6:52 am
It’s short for Freestyle. Japanese tend to shorten English words/nouns like this.
Also, if you watch the show, you’ll find that the main character often says that he only swims Freestyle hence the title, I think.

been waiting for this, thanks Dao <3
August 29th, 2013 at 11:59 am
This show is happy? What’s wrong with that? :P
August 29th, 2013 at 12:04 pm
It’s as Dao said. It’s not a matter of pride about the show being good or being bad to others or whatever opinion about the show someone has.
It’s about homophobic provocation. Dao gave the commenters a chance on the first episode and it got out of hand and extremely offensive. So, fair is fair. You should be glad the comments are back.
August 29th, 2013 at 1:11 pm
i like this anime, every time i watch it made me feel refreshing and peaceful probably because of the art…
August 29th, 2013 at 3:07 pm
There’s definitely a lot of people who would see this anime as gay. Well, even I could agree that this anime is gay by all typical male standards and there’s nothing wrong with that. After all, anything that ranges from metrosexual to homosexual can be described as gay. After all, this anime does cater on boy love undertones. But there’s nothing wrong with that. What I can’t understand is how people who can’t bear to watch this show to begin with, could go on repeating what’s already too obvious per release, even watching to the very last episode just to point out how gay it is.
I think that sort of thing was what Scientific American was talking about when they published this article;
“This study shows that if you are feeling that kind of visceral reaction to an out-group, ask yourself, ‘Why?'”
So, yeah… While any 12 year old who wanted to be a dick for the first time in his life may very well think that it is cool and funny to throw some random homophobic slur to get those +1 internet points, it can actually be seen the other way around. But then again, it’s not like there’s anything wrong about that.
I mean, hey, we all welcome homosexuality to a certain degree. I myself am a fan of girl to girl / yuri. lol

Here’s an interesting thread at the MAL forums related to this if you guys haven’t already read it ^^; :
Is the “controversy” over this really just about it being fanservice for girls?
Read more at:
August 29th, 2013 at 4:55 pm
Nice anime love the story so far, I don’t care if this is a gay anime or whatever as long as there is no boy on boy romance.
August 29th, 2013 at 6:41 pm
I’m loving the story too! If people disregarded the BL teases and the bishiness of the show, you’ll see it actually has a real plot, contrary to popular belief. It’s not overly dramatic or full of twists, action packed fight/competition sequences and stuff like that but it does have a decent plot nonetheless – But I like the fanservice too, so it’s really nice that I can get both from this anime, IMO.
August 30th, 2013 at 12:35 am
I think the controversy pretty much centers on free being a fanservice for girls. I kinda agree with one of the respondents there and the main points raised by the TS is kinda double-standard and is pretty much about trying to find a justification for all the hate free is receiving. The problem with that is that it ignores how almost all of the flamewars resulting from this is more about some random troll throwing some homophobic slur for +1 internets, and none of those arguments he claimed to be the root cause. It doesn’t help that the TS tries to encapsulate all issues with arguments containing a lot of implied elitism like, “Kyo-ani is not for girls” and “we expect to get our fanservice where we usually do”. It ignores what’s really happening.
Furthermore, there are varying issues why an anime would receive a lot of hate but this anime just happen to receive it mostly from homophobic sentiments. I myself admit on hating several other animes based on different issues (mostly because of bad plot which implies I’ve wasted time watching it) but I wouldn’t generalize all issues into my own personal issue without any sort of reality check or hard fact to support my generalizations.
Hell, I could pretty much bash this show for whatever I perceive as its lack of depth. But to claim that all issues centers on my personal issue about the show is pretty much like justifying anyone who backs up my hate (even including the homophobic slurs), but that’s just really bigoted tbh. The way I see it, it’s more like haters are trying to find the thinnest argument they could to make their hate (homophobic or not) seem a bit more justifiable. It seems that in most cases, hate comes first before the justifications.
That aside, yeah, this anime can be entertaining only if you allow yourself to be entertained. But for a BL show to be made into a high-end animation, I kinda hoped that it at least met that same depth “Fruits Basket” had way back. Gawd I love that show.

Yey comments section is back on Free! I was dying to check out comments of everyone whenever I watch this. I like this show especially during the first episodes, it’s pure laughter for me. Sorry for those who thinks this show is gay, well, I’m a girl and I like this genre, It’s not BL anyway. I just like to note that I don’t watch much ecchi anime because guys enjoy that better, I just did not comment. Some shows are targeted to certain audiences. Respect guys, respect.
