...in July/August for a very expensive (thank you weak sterling) holiday. I'm staying with some friends in Tokyo, then heading off backpacking, maybe gonna hit up some music festivals (Fuji Rock) drink alot of Japanese alcohol and do alot of general awesomeness.

So ive been wondering, who's been the to Japan, who wants to go and are there any places that absolutely are a must see?

I live there... here... erm... yeah. Been here for over a year, but I haven't dragged my lazy ass to Tokyo yet. But since you are there you should check out the pantu-vending-machines and go to a maid café if you are a true sicko (and got lots of money).

I dunno yet what to go check but I'm planning on seeing the "Student" part of Tokyo and of course the otaku underground hehe.

My sister just got back from a week long trip to japan during the sakura season, but she hated it D=
She visited all the major tourist places, Tokyo, Kyoto, ect. and her husband forced her to keep on the move all day long so they wouldn't miss anything. She said it was always way too crowded and no one was ever smiling.

But i'm convinced they just did it wrong =P Her husband is a photographer so he just blasted through everything saying "okay got the picture lets go here now".
I think as long as you go at a comfortable pace and soak in the moment it'll be a great visit.
If i went there i'd rent a kimono, a fox mask, go to a festival, buy some dumplings, ect.
and i think japan is big on seasonal things, so i'd keep an eye out for limited time autumn foods and whatnot, yum yum =3
