So, today the Winter Olympic Games (Vancouver 2010) start. It made me think of the amazing story of Steven Bradbury at the games in Salt Lake City in 2002.
The story of this funny Aussie is quite famous in Italy because of a very popular tv show who talked about him and also made fun of him a lot.
If you don't know who the fuck Bradbury is and what he did, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] (final of the short track. bradbury is the first from the right), but then also read about him on [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], 'cause he is not a stupid wannabe who just happened to take part to the Olympic Games.
In Australia there is even a phrase, "doing a bradbury", that means to gain "an accidental win or unexpected or unusual success".

And it seems that wasn't all of it. He passed the semifinals in the same way. It proves that no matter how hard you try, you cannot reach your dreams, because there will always be luckier people that you. And that's the spirit of the olympic games.

yeah. actually, there is more than what i posted, but i could not find a good video in English. During the quarterfinals (where you have to finish first or second to pass), he reached the second place because the third one fell down in the last lap and the second one (or the first, i don't remember) was disqualified; as you said, he passed the semifinals more or less the same way: he reached the second place because all the others fell down again in the last lap, except for the first one.
and then the final and the incredible triumph.
I also found this video: it quickly shows the last laps of quarterfinals, semifinals and finals (in Italian, but still enjoyable for the ones who want to watch the whole thing).
