Post Trip to Tokyo - 12-30-2009, 08:00 PM

Towards the end of June I will be taking a 3 week trip to Japan for a little r&r. the thing is that I don’t really know all that many good places to visit and what to do to keep me entertained for the whole time there or the best place to stay for that matter. For the most part the only really good things that I have scheduled is a namie amuro concert and some shopping in Ginza, so I figured you guys above all others would be able to help me out on some good things to do while I was there. If you have any suggestions on places to visit or a good hotel in the area “I was considering the shangri-la” feel free to post here... thanx in advance

I've heard that manga cafes are pretty reasonable places to sleep the night if you plan on moving around a lot and not sticking to a specific place, something like $12 for 8 hours with all you can drink soft serve ice cream.

Quote:
Here's an example:
8 hours - 1200 yen (about 12 bucks)
You get a small cubicle that's flat and has mats (so its comfortable to sit/sleep on), and there's a small chair you can recline on, and a pillow, as well as a computer with fast internet.
All you can eat ice cream, all you can drink soda, juice, milk, water etc.
You can rent movies there and watch them on your computer if you want for free
You can rent games and play a ps2 game if you want
You can take a shower for an extra 300 yen or so, comes with a shower kit that has a towel, shampoo/conditioner/soap etc.
They have blankets that you can borrow for free, and they have single use toothbrushes that you can have for free.
They have all the latest magazines and comics and whatever if you feel like reading any of them.
I'd say the guy is pretty reliable since he's living in japan but this is second hand information so don't fully rely on it

That's just too good to be true.

My friend has been to Japan twice already and he recommended Akihabara and Shibuya... I guess it's a common sense.

Be sure to visit the AniMate store in Akihabara in Tokyo
(I beleive that's what it's called) it was right next to the UDX building/anime center, with a big blue sign on top of the building visible from the road/main square of the train station. (north side I believe)

(best shots I could get...google maps)

that place was awesome. Probably as close to Otaku heaven as you're gonna get.

8 floors with each one dedicated to a different form of anime merchendise cosplay, posters, manga, video games/dvds, figurines, etc.

I'm actually glad google maps/earth can show what I'm talking about, cause it never occurred to me (until I got back and started talking about it) to take a pic of it when I was there...I guess it was late in the day when I was there and dark when I left (cause it's dark by 5 there)
