I agree that claiming one or another release "sucks" is rude, but this is the internet and anonymity breeds assholery. The best anyone can hope for is someone to give an honest opinion about which file has the best options. All scripts being equal (ripped from crunchy or some other stream) you want the one that is the most legible and has the best encoding for the size of the file for clarity. When someone asks "which is better" between a Horrible or Crunchy (or other group just copying their scripts from them) this should really be the only factor if both the scripts are the same.
After that you have the groups that do everything themselves from the translation on up to encoding and posting the video and adding things like theme song translations and text notes for signs and in these cases people can be concerned and should be because there are all sorts of places where quality can be effected. Font, encoding, filesize, Karaoke, openings/endings, next ep previews, translation choices for key dialog elements(like preferring "Shinegami" to a more literal translation or vice versa), use of honorifics, sign translation, grammar fails and misspellings (I cant say I know enough japanese to watch without subtitles at all but I've picked up enough to know when certain things are translated wrong and it can be annoying on those rare occasions assuming it's not done for the sake of condensing text), etc...
I could go on, the point is assuming it's not a stripped down bare bones translation, there are a lot of areas where one file can be better than another and people are within their right to ask which one people think is better when presented with a choice, after all this is the reason why there are more than one of them posted in many cases and I think we can all appreciate when people offer their time to give the masses something for free. I think ultimately if you've been downloading for any regular period you should eventually start to find the groups who do things the way you like them done so that you dont have to ask or (so that you can offer your opinion to others later). Barring downloading each version to compare, the only other option is to ask people's opinion. The least anyone can do is give an opinion... but then again this is the internet, and it's full of dicks, so what can you do.
