So... I have a .flv file (an oav of a very old anime), 25 minutes ca. long, 40 mb, quite poor quality, and I'm trying to impress subs (just to say it, not English subs) on it in order to create a hardsubbed file.
I searched on the Internet but no results.

I don't want to convert the file into an other format (mkv, avi, mpg, etc.), because I would either get an eye-cancer quality or a file almost 10 times bigger.

How can I impress subs on this file?
And: does the sub file have to be of a particular type (.ass. .srt, etc.)? my file is a .ass file, but I'll use another type if necessary.

you will have to re-encode the .flv to hard-sub it. to have proper subs use xvid4psp. make sure you dl v5 and not 6 as v6 is still in beta and does not yet fully support subs. a tutorial and dl link can be found here --> [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. in xvid4psp set format to flv, you can leave filtering disabled, leave color correction disabled, set video encoding to whatever you wish(the further down the list the higher the quality and filesize), set audio encoding to copy(re-encoding lossy audio formats degrades quality). then at the top click on video, resolution/aspect and set the output resolution to the same as input resolution. when finished click encode and wait
