Default How to set languages in Media Player Classic. - 07-12-2010, 09:04 AM

Hey there, not sure how many people this will help but if you ever get sick of having to change the settings for subtitles and languages when trying to watch videos in Media Player Classic here's a quick step by step on how to set it up so you won't have to again.
This all assumes you are using the cccp codecs and MPC.

Step 1: Open any video with MPC.
Step 2: Right click the blue box labled "FFa" on your task bar.
Step 3: Towards the top of the list you will see "Haali Media Splitter", select that.
Step 4: Hit the "Options" tab at the top of the new window that opens.
Step 5: Hit the + next to "languages" to expand the list.
Step 6: Click on "Audio and Subtitle Languages".

Here is where your personal preferences will come into play. Depending on if you like to watch them in English with no subs or Japanese with English subs it is up to you.

Step 7: Click at the bottom where it will let you type next to "Value:"
Step 8: Type in what you prefer for languages/subs

For step 8 if you like English without subs for anything dubbed you can type in "eng, off;*eng" leaving out the quotations. That will play dubbed stuff without subs and anything else that has no English track with English subs

If you like your shows subbed then you can type in "jpn, eng;eng, off;*,eng" leaving out quotations again. Sorry but this option may not be of much use to everyone and can still require manual language changes if the files have multiple subtitle options or in some cases when the subtitles are listed under the wrong languages.

If you don't like either of those options you can experiment with what you like by hovering your mouse over the "Audio and Subtitle Languages" portion and it will show you a long explanation of how it works and options you can do with it.

Again I hope this helps the lazy people like me but I've found it saves a lot of time and effort going from one episode to the next or one series to the next since they all seem to have a diff language set up. Any questions shoot em my way and I'll try to help you out.

Ok I have a question: I tried this out with a duel language Exiled-Destiny .mkv file which had english as default (to my horror). I put "jpn, eng;eng, off;*,eng" in the values box which has changed the file to have japanese language default which was great but no english subtitles by default.

Did I do wrong I has brain little....?

Okay, I've found 2 possible issues so far. Either the subs are listed as Japanese and the English subs are just blanks or there are multiple subtitle tracks and the first one is just for the OP/ED and nothing else. To fix the first issue just change the value to

jpn,jpn;jpn,eng;eng;off;*,eng

that should fix the issue but may cause issues elsewhere if anything you have is actually shown with Japanese subtitles (though I can't think of any that actually are).

The second issue however I'm afraid I'm not sure how to fix. If the OP/ED subs are the higher priority and also listed as English subs its gonna pick those everytime. I'll try messing around with it some more later but sadly I'm not sure if I can come up with an answer to that one.

Also on a side note, if the other media players use the Halli Media Splitter as well these may work with those players as well, haven't tested it but don't see why it wouldn't work.

Well in the event you still need to manually change the subs/languages you can always right click the Haali Media Splitter icon on your task bar (should be a white box), all the languages and sub options are listed there for changes as well.
