A quick google search got me a little information about .ass files. Also...I think it's .ass, not ass. (the period should come before the ASS since it's a file extension)

Here's my result:

Notes about the ASS file extension:
Errors in your registry are one of the common causes for incorrect file associations on your windows system. It is highly recommended that you check your registry for file association errors (will also check for any other registry errors).

The ASS file type is primarily associated with 'Aegisub' by Rodrigo Braz Monteiro. Aegisub is a computer program created to help in many aspects of typesetting by correcting features found in the Medusa Subtitling Station and adding features it lacks.

Cannot access ASS files on windows?
When windows gives you an error message saying that it
"Cannot open ASS files", this means either:

A. You need to identify a program that can open the file
B. Or your registry may be damaged

RECOMMENDED:
In both cases it is strongly recommended that you
run a free scan for registry errors.
File extension: .ASS

Detailed information for file extension ASS:
Primary association: Aegisub
Company: Rodrigo Braz Monteiro
Identifying characters Hex: 5B 53 63 72 69 70 74 20 49 6E 66 6F 5D , ASCII: [Script Info]

if you just want to see the subs in the video - use the media player classic (MPC)

there you can load the .ass file simply per -> file -> load subtitles...

what type of video are you working with?

you could use virtualdub to hard encode the subs to the file.

you'll need the plugin for virtualdub, called textsub (or vsfilter).

let me know what format video you're working with....

EDIT: or yeah... you could do what he said above LOL. if its just for watching purposes, that's pretty much it. i was all thinking of it from a typesetting perspective haha

Most players are able to subtitle files with the video. You just need to make sure it's timed properly etc.

If it's a bother to have two files. Use mkvmerge or similar.

1. Add video file
2. Add subtitle track
3. Click merge
4. ???
5. Profit
