Default mkv encoder - 05-03-2010, 12:53 AM

Hey guys

What is the best mkv encoder that will work in windows 7? It's fine if it isn't shareware.

I'm looking for something that works well and is easy to use especially to someone new to encoding. If it can copy directly from a DVD that be geat too. The purpose is to back up purchased TV shows that are on DVD into mkv format so they can be condensed into a single hard drive for use in Afganistan.

Resolution is important, that's why I'm asking for mkv.

Pand.

Why do you want it in mkv format? Mkv doesn't necessarily mean higher resolution or quality, it's the video input that determines that.

^ This... You don't really "encode" an mkv file since mkv's are basically a container format. I'd suggest mkvtoolnix if you really want/need to do it though.

You won't get a higher resolution than 720*576px at all

You can't get higher than 720? So all of those 1080p encodes are bogus?

I want to go mkv for the smaller file size.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll take a look at them.

Well, mkv doesn't mean smaller filesize, either. Mkv is just a container for video streams, audio streams etc., and they're the ones that determines the filesize.

Why don't you just encode to AVI or something?
