Default Help with buying a Server - Needed! - 09-02-2011, 05:38 AM

I'm maybe going to buy a server today, about 7 hours from now.
So I need some help. Could anyone of you guys who are more knowledgeable in computer stuff say if this is any good or not? I want your opinion. It's not a new one but a second-hand server.

What the owner did write:

HP ProLiant ML370 G5 Server

HP ProLiant ML370 G5
1 x 3.0 GHz, 1333 FSB, 4MB L2Cache
12 GB of RAM FB-DIM ECC REG
2 x 72GB Hotswap SAS 10.0K RPM
2 x 36GB Hotswap SAS 15.0K RPM unopened pack
HP Smart Array P400 SAS 256MB Cache
2 x 1 Gbit / s network ports
CD-ROM standard 5" so it is easy to replace
2 x 1000W Hotswap Power Supplies
Full redundancy for fans
7 x PCIe 8x, 2 x PCI-x

ML370 G5 Tower / Rack, 19" is a snap
stronger a popular DL380G5, DL360G5.
It is also expensive, with its dual memory banks for redundancy on all 32GB or 64GB if you drive without redundancy.
Total 16x2 ½" SAS / SATA hard drives in hotswap, thus 16TB with cheap SATA disks is no problem with HP original raid.
HP ILO for access to the console window via the remote.
This server can handle dual Intel XEON QC X5470-3, 33Ghz, 12MB cache, 1333FSB VT-x.

(This is a direct translation taken from Google Translate, so nothing is corrected. I'm to tired right now to fix it but you should manage to understand the info, it's 6.30 in the morning and I need to sleep before I'm traveling 1 hour to get this server).

Full detailed information on the Server:

One important thing to know if you don't: Two days ago HP announced they are getting out of the hardware business, probably in 4 months to 1 year. They should honor their warranties, but may or may not provide the kind of user support servers require in the fairly near future. And a discontinued brand will not have the same re-sale value.

As to this rig, obviously it's hard to evaluate without knowing it's intended use. But it sounds like you've already committed to this, so best wishes.

Now, if you'll pardon me, some examples of servers we encounter everyday around here:
FileServe: An HP pocket calculator
FileSonic: A Solar calculator kept in dark basement for security
Uploaded: A potato with 2 wires stuck in it
HotFile: The best equipment the FBI has to offer

I want to make it a server where I can put anime in it and share with friends, maybe this forum and such.
And maybe put my own website on it, if I ever make one or a friends website.

"Edit: Hmm, the documentation says the server supports Xeon 5400 CPUs, that is a 4 year old quad-core generation, most probably slower than all of the curent i5 and i7 desktop quad-cores, what are you planning to do with? I hope it wouldn't be encoding cause you're not gonna get much out of a 4 year old CPU when it comes to encoding.
As far as I can see, it doesn't support HyperThreading either."

Someone told me this (above), but could you confirm it?

It won't be fast on encoding, but with 8 cores you'll probably get the same result as a current I5. for hosting a website.. it could probably even host animetake (minus the mysql)..
for sharing anime, you need a fast upload speed or put it in a datacenter.. I don't know where you're from but you can't do this in america as you'll get sued by copyright nazis instantly.

I'm paying about 973.77 US dollars for it.
So what you think, is it expensive for a second-hand server?

Okay I get it now, but I haven't planned to use it for encoding nor can I anything that have to do with fansubbing, so here on this front it's safe to say I'm not gonna do encodings.
But to be honest I have been lately thinking about learning timing & encoding, but not on this server.
However if I and if I want to do encodings what should I think of and what kind of computer should I get?
Oh lol that was something, the whole AT minus the mysql. What do I need (upgrade) to host even the mysql?
Okay, my internet connection speed is 100Mbit/s up & down. Is this enough?
I see then I will think about it, I'm living in Scandinavia (I can say it to you which country in particular it is).

And one last thing, so what do you think about this server (HP ProLiant ML370 G5 Server)? Should I buy it and is it worth it?

Thanks for helping me out on this matter!

just know what your getting yourself into.

if its to store anime, you need a back up media. i suggest a external harddrive or 2.
i would also start a backup rotation.
i'v only done Microsoft server '03 so i wont bore you with OS advice.
theirs also security issues you will face, a friend of mine's website was hacked and information was lost.
the cost to run the server of course.

and most of all, Motivation. I helped my friend start a site he was asked to make and working at it everyday is, Murder. (i commend animetake staff for their work ) if its hundred of links you will need to sort them, remove dead links, add new links and so on.

good luck if you wish to go through with it though.

the two old xeon cpu's just aren't going to be enough to fully host animetake, a website of your own would be no problem though.
I can see the country your in and your internet is fast enough.. For what you want, just get a desktop pc!
get a big tower I5 or I7 or amd X4 with 8 GB ram and 6 x 2 tb sataII (6 tb storage raid 10) for 600$usd and you're off much cheaper:/
