Default PC to TV via HDMI on Win7 help - 08-20-2011, 11:35 PM

as the title says, i need help connecting my PC to TV(Toshiba 40RV525R), looked around on diff sites and forums, tried lotsa stuff and nothing, if anyone could solve it here then i would appreciate it. So here are the details;

When i connect my pc to tv via HDMI then it gives me crap quality and weird color. My gpu is GTX460, drivers up to date. I tried different HDMI cables(HDMI to HDMI with an adapter or mini hdmi to HDMi directly, tried another hdmi cable from PS3) and no change, i fixed the oversided image by setting the TV to native but the colors are still crap. I got W7 recently so im not used to it. Before i used XP with VGA connection with custom resolution to 1080p and the image was great. I would do the same and not really care about HDMI but Win7 caps my resolution on 1360x768 via VGA and i cant change it to 1080p no matter what, custom resolution test always fails, tried diff settings as well. Anyway to force it to 1080p like on XP? It seems weird cuz my brother can get 1080p via VGA with no problems on W7 on an older card. So anyway to fix the HDMI ? Tested the HDMi port on TV with ps3 and it works fine.
PS. by crap quality n color i mean that its worse than VGA output on XP before. For example gradient in anime (from light ball to dark change or other color changes) you can see the circles around the light area, its not smooth at all. It looks fine on monitor and before on XP vga. I would dual boot XP and W7 but XP does not support AHCI drivers which is troublesome to fix.
Any feedback is appreciated.

First off, I cannot solve your problem directly. Sorry, but what you are describing is beyond my level.

But I did want to ask: Did the TV have an SVGA port? If so, have you tried that yet?

My new(er) laptop came with an HDMI output, but 1 out of 3 boots the sound would not work.
Simply put HDMI-to-Computer interfaces have yet to stablize/standardize yet, and errors like the one you are experiencing will happen (in other words, you aren't alone -- and the tech is not 'plug-n-play' as it should be)

After 2 months of trying to get HDMI to work, I simply went back to my SVGA connection (and a 3.5mm stereo cord out of my headphone jack). And it worked rather well.

Until my video card driver got updated.
Damn thing no longer had the resolution choice available for my TV anymore and the picture was distorted.

So I had to go to the laptop's website and download the old video driver. It mostly works (there is a little squeezing, but it's much better then before -- and sometimes during a boot the resolution will be wrong. I have to leave the PC choice and come back and then the TV snaps back to the correct resolution. PITA, but much better then what I had). Though eventually my laptop will need to be reformated back to factory settings. when that happens I will do my damndest to make sure the video card driver never gets updated at all and go back to the sweetness it originally was.

Anyway, as I said this does not directly help your problem.

Simply:
1) I'd advise getting a cheap SVGA cable and skipping HDMI.
2) You aren't the only one who has to deal with this crap.

Hmm it does not have SVGA, just D-Sub which is the regular VGA.

Code:
Connectivity:
HDMI: 3 In
PC Input: D-Sub
Composite: A/V 2 In
Component: Video 2 In
S-Video: 1 In
Digital Audio: 1 Optical Out
Analog Audio: 1 Out
Front/Side Inputs: Side

and yeah, i was thinking about getting new cables but it will be impossible to skip HDMI like you said. If i get a DVI to VGA cable then it will be no different than right now(VGA to VGA) with the (DVI)adapter, VGA with W7 in my case is capped at 1360x768 resolution (its the TVs fault im guessing). So my last hope is DVI to HDMI cable which im planning to order soon. Right now i used the mini-HDMI port on the GPU so maybe if i use DVIon gpu > HDMI on tv then something might change but unlikely since the signal should be the same as hdmi with no audio.

Paragraphs are your friend.

And it sounds like a hardware issue, for example some hdmi ports don't transmit audio.

well lolz yeah its messy
ps i don't care about the audio from hdmi since i have 5.1 speakers, just stated it as a signal comparison, as said above, i would use VGA if it worked same way as in XP but it doesn't.

i don't think hardware is the issue since it was perfect in XP (atleast VGA was).

Edit: i think its the stupid EDID thing not letting me set resolution via vga

Are you using Windows' display setting to set the resolution or nVidia's control panel? Probably get more options via nVidia's control panel.

Dami -- the D-sub in this case is most likely in reference to D-Sub 15, which is another name for a VGA connection.

Thus it should work.

Hell, just take a look at your computer's video-card-to-monitor connection. Count the holes (should be 3 layers of 5 each). Then look at your TV's connections. They should match.

Screw it, I just took your model number and looked it up myself.
The D-Sub listing is definitely for the standard PC VGA connection.

Yeah, you might be limited to the resolution you previously mentioned, but it's still a workable solution.
If you go down this viable route, I suggest getting the cable on Ebay cheap.

yo Dami,
I have the exact same problem. When i Connect my Alienware to my tv with a Hdmi cable the colours are off, and it sometimes even get worse. The colors then shift to ecxtreme green and red tones.
However Im using a Radeon graphics card and a Samsung tv. I do have win 7 so it might be something about the newer cards or win 7. As soon as i find out something I'll let you know

Like i said above, i cant change it no matter what, i tried "Screen Resolution" via windows, NVid Control Panel, Custom Resolution, Advanced Settings> List All Modes and nothing. If i missed something then tell me.

Well yeah i know the mentioned D-sub=15 is vga, and just to make sure i even counted the pins right now and its 15. I know it supports 1080p cuz my brother uses same thing with no problems. Also the Wiki link you provided says that it even goes up to 2048×1536px @85 Hz (388 MHz) so it should have no problems. So what cable should i get, DVI to VGA? right now i have VGA to VGA with a DVI adapter so would it not be the same thing? My brother uses an adapter too and no problems. Is there some kind of special cable i need? Direct DVI to HDMI and DVI to VGA are the only ones i did not try.

Thanks, appreciate it. Come to think of it, i have a netbook with an HDMI with Radeon gpu and the colors were not to great either if i remember correctly , it does also have a VGA port so i will test that to see if i can go above 1360resoultion.
