Default [Help] Play Mkv in Linux Live cd ubuntu - 07-20-2011, 02:49 PM

Hi, i'm new in ubuntu but a because a certain condition, i decide to try Live CD Ubuntu to try it out before migration.

- is it possible to install application for watching mkv in Live CD ubuntu? i know it will disappear after reboot, but its important for the sake of testing.

- My old Live CD Ubuntu Feisty Fawn can recognize mkv as movie file. yet, it cant play it due to player codec that needs to be downloaded and installed. i try to install an application but the download failed because the wrong link of old database of feisty fawn(saw it on a forum).

- I dont know how to fix the database link in repository, and give up after tried few things i saw on many forums. probably because i dont know how to work on Linux yet

I'm using an outdated version but this might help.

System> administration> synaptic package manager> settings> repository. Check the
boxes and update then look for the codecs, mark them for install. Should work for all
players.

or

ubuntu software center> VLC> install.

type: apt-get install vlc in console. But since its ubuntu (im using debian) if you are not login as root into console, probably need to add sudo; sudo apt-get install vlc

I'd rather MPlayer over VLC to be honest but the best on for linux in my opinion is [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]..

Linux install guide [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] since you are using Fiesty you might need to jump down to the add repo section. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

1: kmplayer.
2: gom player (sweeter interface compared to k/mplayer but requires a bit more of setting up to run everything you want)
3: mplayer.
last: vlc.

Well i'm sure you can run mpc-hc though wine as well but if you run live disk you may experience performance and latency issues.

Gom player is a windblows only player.

KMplayer is either a windblows only player (The Kmplayer as it's called) or a KDE frontend to Mplayer (Which is plain KMplayer).

If you've got Ubuntu get SMplayer, if it's Kubuntu get KMplayer......You do not want the default GUI front end, believe me.

You are correct, I can see that the review that i originally read has been edited and that the author takes back whatever he said about the cross-platform support.

Sorry bout that.

thank you guys, after reading a bit more on forums, it seems Feisty Fawn is no longer supported for packages and reach its end of life. a few forums said that i can still install packages by changing the links in repositories. but my head just cant take it and about to explode

sooo.... the best way to do is to update for the new one and do the app install like other ubuntu
