Default External Hard Drive disconnects Internet - 05-05-2011, 11:22 AM

Just a month ago, my Seagate Expansion 1TB External case broke, leaving only the HDD inside working. After ordering a new 3.5 SATA HDD Case (generic brand), I plugged in my Seagate 1TB HDD to it and then into my computer. After I noticed my internet drop after this, I instantly figured it was the HDD so after unplugging it, the internet went back on. This would then happen every time I connect the external HDD to my computer.

Anyone know how to fix this? I have searched Google but to no avail and I figured since almost everyone here must own an external HDD, they might've encountered the same and might not how to fix it.

I have a somewhat similar problem on my spare computer. It uses a USB modem (powered through the cable) and whenever I plug something else (usually a device that is powered through the cable as well, e.g. external HDD) in in another USB port, the internet will go poof.

I also noticed that but simply clicking the diagnose and repair for the connection and it'll be running normally again. Of course, that's just for my case.

Tried that but also to no avail. I tested the HDD on my laptop and even from there not only did the wireless connection but the internet connection on my main computer shut off until I unplugged the HDD.

To both questions, it seems likely that there's a power drop problem: in one case a spike, in the other an overall overload, either because the host machine can't handle the total electrical load, or the peripheral has a problem. In both cases, you could try a powered USB hub: that is an external hub that has it's own power supply. They are cheap.

On the drive with the case replacement: try the powered hub if you like, but I wouldn't be surprised to find the salvaged drive fails soon. I would get a replacement and transfer the data now while you can.

Fist question How do you connect to the internet? Dailup? USB air card? ethernet?

EDIT: Does the usb enclosure have it's own power supply?

Your HDD could take the power away from your Internet hardware, this is the best reason, I guess.

If it's the electric load, then you may be happy, that the stuff didn't explode.
I had something similar with my old encoding computer, and it ended it's live with a "Bang".

EDIT: Seems to be answered already.

If a drive is pulling more than 500mA, the typical ammount allocated to a USB port, to spin up. It is likely going to fail soon.

EDIT: Grammar fail.

I connect via Ethernet, everyone else in the household via a wireless router. The enclosure uses a power adapter which I have plugged into two different power outlet and still the same result. I am posting this from school so I won't be able to test anything until school finishes

1. Try grabbing latest drivers.
2. You using front USB ports or Rear? Try using your Rear one.

As your HDD is 3.5", it must use an external power supply, so power shouldn't be a problem. This is an odd problem, I suggest you take the enclosure back to your retailer and have them check it up, especially if it's affecting 2 computers.

Ehehe actually my HDD case is one of those generic unbranded ones from eBay and I have tried both the front and rear USB ports, still disconnects internet. My only other solution would be save up money and get a new branded HDD case but I need to see if there's a way to this problem first.
