Default Cable or ADSL2+?? (Aussie pl help!!) - 02-18-2011, 08:39 PM

Those of you who lives in Sydney (Aus) would like to help me out here??

I'm planning to move next month and the place where I'm going to move is North Strathfield. I've been using TPG ADSL2+ and the speed is just awful - suppose to get 4Mbps but I get around 400~800Kbps (but I endured it ).
I've been yearning to get cable as I thought ADSL2+ is pure rubbish so, if I can get the cable for my new home I would like to get one.

However, when I was searching of good ISP that provides good cable connection, I saw a couple of threads about which one is best to get between cable and ADSL2+.

As a result, here's what I know so far:
- For cable: it is faster than ADSL2+ but, the speed fluctuates depending on how many people are connected to it... so, I'm guessing for example, during night everyone uses internet so for those people who are using cable at that area, the speed will be slower (such as people using torrents etc)
- For ADSL2+: It is fast but depends on how far your away from exchange and how good your modem is (also how good your ISP is). However, the speed rarely fluctuates because everyone is connected to their own port at the exchange... so the speed of ADSL2+ would be stable and not lag at peak times??

Thus, there are pros and cons here so I'm pretty much stuck whether I should get a cable or ADSL2+ when I move to new home.

Also, which internet provider (ISP) is best for me to contract to?? like I've used TPG coz I was told it was good and fast 2 years ago but now, its shit -_-;; should I use Optus, BigBond etc???
Please recommand me the best one for me to use ^^

Oh MORE IMPORTANTLY, I use internet for DL and gaming... I need around 200GB+ per month for DL and good speed/latency for gaming.

Sry guys I didn't intend to make this post long but I just want to get clear and precise replies from you guys.

P.S Is there Optic Fiber available in Australia?? if so, is it limited to some areas?? Also, I don't get how "Naked DSL" works... is it faster than normal ADSL2+??

I'm an aussie. And I'm with TPG ADSL2 too. Sure it's not blindingly fast but it's very stable and constant which is something valuable in internet connections. Also keep in mind that's megaBITS per second, not megabytes.. so it's closer than you might think. If you like stable internet I thoroughly recommend you stay with ADSL2 - assuming your new phone exchange has it availiable. As far as I know there is no fibre optics stuff yet, I believe that's what this big rollout thing (in political media) is about. I believe naked DSL is virtually the same as ADSL2, except your home phone (landline) and all calls in done over the internet. This has advantages and disadvantages, something that relies even more on a stable internet connection.

aussie on tpg adsl2+ here. adsl2+ your looking at 700kb/s and cable your looking at 1100kb/s (values taken from my self and a friend a few houses down). the faster speed isnt worth the extra cost and smaller download amount. also naked cuts out your phone and you use voip instead. (melbourne btw)

Aussie with both connections here. Lolz. On Optus Cable, I get 2MB/s easily on downloads. Upload is crap though, struggle to get past 50KB/s. For ADLS2+ however, I get 600KB/s down and 800KB/s up. Do note that I'm 3KM away from my exchange. Do youself a check and go [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and find out how far you are from an exchange, as ADSL2+ loses speed the further away from the exchange you are. With Cable, 99% of the time I get full speed. It slows down in the evening a bit, down to 1.3MB/s but that's cool. With Optus, you can play $20 ontop of every plan (per month) to get Fibre Optic. I've heard about people reaching 7-8MB/s on it with MU premium. I can't afford it myself though. Oh and my ADSL2+ is with iPrimus. I use it for torrents and downloads mainly, and when I want to upload stuff. My Cousin has 2 connections like myself, only his companies are Telstra and TPG. TPG is crap, he uses it for downloads but that's it, his on the unlimited plan. He said he got DC a lot, but this is a year or so back. Maybe they've improved, I'm not sure, but he uses Telstra Cable for all gaming now. He can get 3MB/s in real life.

i guess im the few lucky ones with tpg, never had problem/s with them unless it's their fault (ie. maintenance and such). you could also play with your modem's settings you might squeeze a few hundred kbps or better yet visit whirlpool.net.au to get better advises since tpg reps also lurk there. stick with tpg if your a heavy downloader since they have the best deals.

Yeah, I sometimes mix up the units please bare with me though.
For ADSL2+, is there any good ISP I can try aprt from TPG?? or is it still good idea to stay with TPG??
As for cable, I'm not sure actually.... if the speed gets fluctuated and becomes slower at peak time than there is no point in its speed faster than ADSL2+... well, at least that's what I think...

Also, tnx for the info about naked DSL

That's for my Cable.
Haha, sup man. Your always there when I'm in pinch and I really appreciate that XD
Wow, you must be damn rich to have both connections running at the same time. Damn, I'm envious of you...
I just checked in TPG website that my new home is 1.1km away from the exchange... which is a bit better than my previous one (1.5km away).
As for cable, you still get THAT much speed even when it's slowed?? damn, than getting a cable is a good idea instead of ADSL2+... but it really depends on where you live right?? Also, if I do get one, I should go with Optus??

For ADSL2+, is IPrimus good?? I mean, I've been using TPG and I always thought that it's the best but now its shit (service is shit as well). OR do you have any recommendation for good ISP??

Yeah your right. TPG has best deals. However, their speed is just pathetic despite your close/far away from the exchange. Like I said before, my new home is 1.1km away from the exchange which is a bit better than my previous home. However, I don't know if that is going to improve my speed or not...

your Estimated speed (17000) is better than mine (15666) i only get a sync of 1020 / 12731-129XX kbps but have a stable speed of 1.2-1.5mb/s real time. -TPG Internet · ADSL2+ Off-Net Unlimited

Yeah, from that distance, 1.5MB/s real world should be achieveable. If that's the case then don't bother with CABLE, unless you can afford to pay the extra 20 every month, and get 1337 speeds. Lolz. iPrimus has been good for me, even for gaming, but Cable is just better. Lower Ping, very reliable/stable connection. I've never DC in game. On BA, my cable gives me 35ms ping while ADSL2+ gives me about 80ms. Not a very big difference.

The reason I have 2 plans is because my Optus is with the Fusion plans, which means I get those unlimited free calls (don't make too much, about $30-40 a month, mostly because of calls to mobile) so the Cable is just an extra, 120GB is nothing though. iPrimus, I have one of their old plans, so I get 500GB for $50 bucks (it was a special pricing that came with line rental, but I ditched them a while back for the home phone, but the pricing on the internet stayed the same). I'm about 3KM+ from the exchange, but 600kb/s is perfect for my torrents or MU premium queue downloads.

I guess that is the "Max" speed that I can but, doesn't your modem have to be good as well?? I mean I'm using right now DLink DSL-G605T which is compatible for ADSL2+... I don't know... but do you think it is good idea to get new modem??

Anyway, you got good speed if you think about it. Well, I guess I'll have to stick with TPG than

Hmm, but that's the "max" speed you can get isn't it?? I mean in reality you'll get something like 700~KB/s??? and also isn't it depends how good your modem is as well?? I mentioned my modem above so yeah....

Also, I don't get what you mean by "get 1337 speeds"?

I think I'll just stick with TPG if there aren't any more suggestions... I mean from my perspective it got shit service but majority of people like it??

Oh, so that's why you have 2 plans... well that's convenient isn't it?? all you have to do is if you want to DL switch to this, if you want to play games switch to another one.
