Default Essential Codecs - 01-04-2011, 09:45 PM

Hey guys this might be a bit of a rant so bear with me would appreciate any help

If your computer was brand new (fresh out of the box what would be the only codecs you would need to put on it for watching anime and movies)

the reason im asking was my computer is quite old ill be replacing it some day soon hopefully but when i started out downloading anime videos i wasnt very computer sharp id visit websites saying download this player, that player this codec that codec so overtime id say i have too many maybe on my system and possible problems may be occuring the reason im askin is at the moment i have two problems both involving thumbnails per say

i keep my anime in seperate folders on external harddrives and i have view thumbanails on all (i like how it looks) but lately ive encountered some probs when i enter certain folders and the thumbnails start turning into the picture one wont work and i get a box that says windows has encountered a problem and need to close and this happens in only selected folders others load just fine

the other problem again is when i open other folders one or maybe two of the episodes the thumbnail pic wont appear yet the others (all the exact same file) work just fine any idea why this would be

heard these might be certain avi or some other codecs causing these problems but im just going on stuff ive read online trying to sort the problem

sorry for all that just wanted to be clear

thanks for your help guys

i use some of K-Lite's Codec contents for thumbnail previews and media icons also mpc-hc, mediainfo lite but not it's codecs. for my play back setup i use CoreAVC 2.0 Pro, ffdshow, MatroskaSplitter, madVR, DirecVobSub (auto loading version).

For the glory of motherland, use CCCP. XD

Seriously.

Unless your processor suck(single core) like mine, CCCP is perfect.

Otherwise get CoreAvc for videos (a certain chinese video player has a modified version of it for free called Storm codec).

Just use cccp, it'll play most of the files out there, and real alternative if you have real media files.

As for the thumbnail, this is just my wild guess, but it might be because your pc is "too" old and the files are "too" fragmented so it just gave up after a certain amount of time. My advice would be to "not" create as many folders-with in- folder as possible, clear your cache/thumbnail so that window can create a new fresher one, and defragment your hard drive. Also try copying those "broken" files to another location or test to see if there's errors in those (like crc test).

To be honest there is no right answer to your question. If anybody says "Hey use this one, it's the only one you'll need" they are either full of it or have no concept of the quality of video they are watching. Lets face it there are probably very few ppl that actually watch video on more then one or two machines. Even systems that are same model with identical hardware are different after a few days of loading individual preferences.

I have only found one solution that works to give me great sight and sound quality. That is experimentation with several codecs until you find the right combination for each format. And yes it can be a long and frustrating road.

That said the best all around solution I believe is (for free) FFDShow. Just remember there are three different versions. CCCP, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], ffdshow tryouts, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], and the official ffdshow, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].
Each has it's strong points but are almost identical. It never hurts though to try and improve quality by trying all.

CCCP updated 10/10/2010
Tryouts updated 12/27/2010
Official updated 11/16/2010

For fee and the codec I use is CoreAVC. This is a H.264 decoder and roughly 20% to 30% faster then libavccodec, which is used in ffdshow. I have found that it can give dramatic results over other codecs and if you watch enough video on your computer, well worth the cost. There are cracked versions though I do not known if there are issues with updating it with a crack. But it can give you the opportunity for comparison against other codecs.

Hope this helps.

I Agree with them, just use CCCP and everything is fine.
