Default Getting New Laptop : need suggestions - 12-03-2010, 01:39 AM

Getting myself a new laptop as mine is 5 yrs old and starting to show its age im currently looking at the new dell xps and im not sure about all the new processors i3-i5-i7 etc

The current spec im looking at is

Intel® Core™ i7 Processor 740QM (1.73 Ghz, 6MB, 4C)
Windows 7
17.3" HD+ WLED True-Life (1600x900)
3GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 445M Graphics Card
4096MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x2048]
500GB (7,200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive
Bluray Drive

All for €1100 , are there any other laptops i should be looking at in this price range or is this as good as it gets tbh im only really dissapointed that there is no 1080p screen.

Since your looking at the top of the range stuff, I'm guessing portability and such isn't at the top of your list. So I'm going to ignore weight and battery life, because anything that's 17" isn't going to be light, and anything with an i7 Quad ain't gonna have good battery life. I'm not sure what pounds to dollar ratio is. I'm guessing $2.5k would be your equivalent.

ASUS G73JW-FHD-TZ039V i7-740QM 1.73GHz, 8GB, 1TB, 17.3" WUXGA, GTX460M 1.5GB, BR, BT, WIN 7 HOME PREM 64B

Processor: Intel® i7 740QM Quad Core 1.73GHz (Turbo 2.93 GHz) 6M/8 Thread
Chipset: Intel® HM55
Memory: 8GB DDR3 1333 (4x2GB) + BONUS 4GB Memory (12GB Total)
Storage: 500GB Hybrid 7200rpm x 2
Optical: BR Writer
Display: 17.3" LCD 1920 x 1080 Resolution
Graphics: nVidia GTX460 1.5GB VRAM
WebCam: 2.0M
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Comms: 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, 10/100/1000 Ethernet, Bluetooth V2.1+EDR
Ports:
1 x Microphone-in jack
1 x Headphone-out jack
1 x RJ45 LAN Jack for LAN insert
1 x HDMI
4 x USB
Audio: Altec Lansing® speakers with array microphone
Card Reader: 5in1 (SD/MMC/MS/XD/SM) Card Reader
Battery: 8 Cell / 2600mAh
Accessories: Bag, Mouse & headset
Dimension & Weight: 320mm x 415mm x 56.89~18.9mm, from 3.99kg

You get a faster Graphics Card, BluRay burner instead of just reader, Faster and twice as big HDD, 1080p display and overkill RAM. Being Asus, it'll be more reliable than a Dell as well. Just check out the G73 range, there are some with 3D gaming support, some with ATI VGA ect.

Er I suggest you buy a normal 1. Because I once bought a high spec laptop and trust me It does do its thing but i wont last. Mine was the graphic card. i broke down. Because of the game. I played too long =D. My warranty finished and i have to use my own money to pay. As u all know graphic card is never cheap for laptops. If you wanted to get for gaming, Its better to get a really good Destop.
Cheers..

Lolz, good advice Demonz. But that's not all. With Laptops, anything they claim to be is actually half of what their Destop equivalent are. Take for example, the 5870m graphics card. For a desktop, it has 1600 SP, while with the Laptop version, it only has 800 and has been underclocked as well. What this means is that it's closer in performance to a 5750, which is less than half the speed of a full fledged 5870. Of course, to be considering a laptop, ussjtrunks must have his reasons. The reason I recommended Asus was because they are reliable. Dells, in my experience, ain't so reliable.... nor are HP... Toshiba on the other hand are, if you can find their Qosmo range.

He said 1100 euros, not pounds. So thats about $1450, not $2500

EDIT: 1450 US Dollars, not sure about Australian.

Lolz, AUD is close enough to USD. Ah, damn you guys have it cheap there, the dell XPS of similar spec cost 2k + delivery here so I assumed it was around that mark. That's bloody good value, unless you can find a G73 there for roughly the same price seeing how the XPS is cheaper.

honestly u can get a laptop for less then a grand that would do all you would want a laptop to do. unless you're rich and want to blow 2-4grand on a sony/asus high end laptop that could be better spent on.... well, anything else. my laptop now cost about $800, does all i need it to do, plays sc2, plays 1080p etc. etc.

Getting a desktop would be cheaper as well as better. Though horrible for portability if that's why you prefer laptops. With laptops your going to have to buy one to suit your needs. What are you planning to do on the laptop? If your not going to play much games on it you wont need to buy the Asus laptop mentioned above and to my knowledge there isn't much need for any more then 4gb of ram (for gaming). It is also not a good idea to consider 3d gaming to be a deciding factor when buying a laptop (or a PC for that matter) as itself is fairly useless without the $200 (I think) glasses or those bad stereoscopic ones.

My laptop was also Asus brand. But the main thing is for what function it is use for. Like mine. Gaming, work. End up for 6 month for fixing ~_~. And now i can only use for nearly one hour. Cant even play the game cause scare the graphic card over heat. I cant replace a new one since its too EXP. Since im living in Malaysia. It would probably cost RM 600++. To us Malaysian its very EXP.
