Default Badminton Thread - 09-04-2009, 08:38 PM

Well, since there appears to be a couple badminton players here in the forums, I'd thought I'd start up a thread. Simple stuff really. Anyting badminton related is welcome whether it be about equipment, technique, tournaments or anything you think is badminton relevant (hell, if there's a badminton anime give a shout out here) XD

As for myself, I've been playing badminton for about 6 years now. I started in high school and I'm now in second year university. I'm no where close to varsity level though TT _ TT I play on average 3 times a week for about 2 to 3 hours each time. I play more during holidays or long breaks XD

About my gear, I've been using the same racket for the past 5 years; an MP99 (3U G4...I think...). Yes, I know the 99s are discontinued, but despite that I think it fits my playing style (offensive) very nicely. I used to use Yonex BG65 strings as they were the cheapest but I have recently tried BG85s and am now using BG70s. I don't even know what tension I strung at originally as I just told the guy to do it at whatever he recommended but now I'm stringing at 26lbs. I prefer white strings with orange grip on my 99 but I don't always get to choose.

On a side note, I must admit, the string durability is very noticable between types. BG65 is pretty standard and usually last me about 6 months (or at least it did during high school when I didn't play as intensely). When I switched over BG85s for once, they were much more repulsive (bouncy) than the 65s; could be due to tension change (I bumped it up 2lbs from 22 to 24) or the strings, I'm not sure). However, the 85s broke after 3 months. They were fun to use though but the durability is something that annoyed me so I went for BG70s which claim to have very high durability. I'll see how long it'll take for me to snap them but yah XD

I usually play plastic birdies although I'd much prefer feathers for the sound and ability to slice. Also, plastics tend to collapse at higher speeds and become warped relatively easily. For plastics I go with Yonex 300s or 350s, blue or green (cause I haven't found any reds) preferrable neon yellow colour (white is so hard to see along many gyms which are painted the same colour). If I'm playing at a club such as Flying Dragon, Lee's Badminton, or Mandarin Badminton then it doesn't matter as they paint their walls a green or blue colour which contrasts well with any type of bird. For feather birdies, Aeroplanes or RSL tourney's are my preffered choice. I haven't tried steaming even though you're supposed to, to improve durability, but yah...

I don't know what else to add but I think that's good enough for a starter? NOW IT'S UR TURN TO SHARE! RAWR!

Actually play badminton is more tiring than playing soccer especially single. I remembered there is 1 time I play I was drenched by sweat like taking bath..
BTW, who's you favorites player now??

And Phuzy, that's indeed very long starter...

Ore no turn! Although I can't remember much from when I started playing badminton. ¬¬

So I started playing badminton when my Vietnamese friend asked me if I could train with him. I had nothing to do anyways and I always thought about giving badminton a shot, so I accepted.

I was about 11 years old at that time, so it was physically hard to begin with. After a year, my friend got promoted to the second training team (out of 3, the first being the best and the third for the beginners), so I had no one to play with and I stopped. I started again when I was 14, because some of my old friends started playing, too, and I just couldn't resist the urge of starting again with them, so here I am training in the second training team with my friends.

My first racquet was a Carlton Titanium my mom bought for like 50 Danish Kroners (which is roughly 10 bucks). I recently used a Forza Ti-45 N-Forze Power racquet I got from my brother's friend, but it literally broke in half when I collided with my friend (playing doubles, lol), so my friend insisted in me getting his Yonex 7700 for free, but the strings only lasted for 1 day. I'm currently using a Chinese Toppro racquet (yay for chinese quality) I bought in China.

I only play using feather birdies, since I only play when I'm training, and we only have these Yonex Feather Shuttlecocks. I still play three times a week, still getting better, in fact, someone told me that I was able to move to the first training team. But I barely know anyone in over there, so I'm definitely not intending to move.

As for official games in my country, I never won a single one T-T.. The next is coming in about a month, and I'm pretty confident in myself, so I'm thinking about giving it my all and hopefully win my first game

I play badminton with my brothers sometimes, just for fun.

Havn't got that good badminton rackets. I still remember that we where able to break the handle of the racket and a lot of times the shuttle got stuck inside the racket.
