I believe Muay Thai is one of those things you have to pick up fairly early in life in order to become truly proficient. From what I understand, their training (kicking/punching using specific body parts) hardens those bones considerably more so than for most people. While this is true for any martial arts that throws a punch or a kick, Muay Thai relies on this hardened bone advantage for offensive power.

With respect to this thread: I do kickboxing and some sort of karate/kung-fu fusion thing. I've been thinking about picking up judo, but I'm not the most flexible of people. And I also agree that fighting in a match or in the ring is not the same as street/real combat fighting. Street fighting is far more vicious, and dangerous.

schwann, I think that applies to most things, you gotta pick them up early in life + years of practice/experience to become proficient... ah, but trying to learn new things never hurts ...

Oh I agree. The same is true of anything (writing, music, a profession, martial arts etc...). Specifically, I was referring to the fact that starting Muay Thai training pre-puberty will give you a substantial advantage over anyone who starts later in life. For people who have been learning a particular skill earlier on, there are notable differences in both physiology and brain development after the onset of puberty compared to late-starters. Even if late-starters eventually accumulate the same number of years, training and experience, they will most likely get inferior results.

^ very true... since you tend to learn the best when your a kid...
brains like sponges and the like *sigh*... i think mine imploded early though, from learning overload...

and as awesome as Muay Thai sounds I don't think i'll ever take it up, sticking to one practice is hard enough...

two's good too then ...
just depends on what you wanna achieve out of it...
if you wanna get anywhere in any sport, you gotta dedicate yourself
and be prepped to sweat to death horribly [says the lazy-ass herself ]...

or if you're just interested in some light learning that's good too i guess...
