Question ATI 5770 and 5750 vs last gen cards - 06-13-2010, 09:23 PM

Hey guys, I just want some opinions on the ATI's 5770 and 5750 for an upcoming budget build that I would like to complete near August. In total the parts would come to about $650 including the monitor off of Newegg. Should I go with last gen's cards for increased frame rates, of stay with the 5770 for a future proofed graphics card solution when more games start using DX11.

The 5770 is still pretty new, isn't it?

By the way, what type of CPU are you planning on getting?

The other day someone turned round to me and told me to get a life.
I replied "I am a gamer... I have many lives"

if he got that one, it'd leave him with $240 to purchase a case, cpu, HD, monitor, motherboard, and a lot more.

Honestly speaking, I would spend less on my vga, and more on more ram, bigger hdd, and better cpu with that kind of budget. Because using $400 on a system. That would mean something based of the LGA775 or low end AMD3 cpus. Depending on the res of the LCD your looking at (I doubt 1920 x 1200), but low resolution game play is more dependant on a good CPU and RAM than it is a vga. In other words, an E5300 with 2gb ram and a 5850 would perform similar to a i5-750 with 4gb ram and a 5750 at 1280 x 1024. If your getting a crappy cpu and little ram, then it doesn't matter if you got a 5970 CF, you won't be getting frames anywhere near a vga's full potential. If this is the case, I would recommend you get a second hand 4770 or something, spend more on a better CPU and ram, then buy a decent vga at a later date. If not, then go the cheaper 5750 and buy a second one later on for CF.

Hey battousaism, I've got a ATI 5770 and ATI 5870 at home. To tell you the truth I would say ATI 5870 cause as hoylguy11 said it comes with a CODMW2 game. So it's like a double kill *thumbs up* But if money's an issue here i think ATI 5770 would be a better start... Cause if you think of it properly you're going to use this computer for a while... And in that period I'm sure Mi***soft or some other company would come out cool new stuff and you wouldn't be able to play with them...
So conclusion, ATI 5870 if you can afford it if not, ATI 5770 *good luck choosing*

Forget those cards they are mainstream nvidia style go for the 5870 or the 5850 wich are better cards, see this link in amazon for a 5870 1gb xfx:

i wont recomend ya those low end cards unless you want to trow away your money, and if you got a 4870 or something similar i would recomend ya to wait till fall of the year to see if new tech comes out and make the old tech go down in prices

lolz, if he does get a 5870, all he'll have enough for would be a P4 pre H/T tech. Even with the 5870, I doubt that it'ld even get 20fps at 1650x1050. Atomic PC magazine published an article on upgrades (april 2010). 2 systems from Circa 2004 and 2006 were put to upgrades to show how upgrading a single part would affect them. Here's a basic summary of the results:

Test: Crysis load time, Boot load time, Crysis 'High' 1280 x 1024 0x AA 16x AF, COD: MW2 1680 x 1050 2xAA 16x AF,
Circa 2006 Intel systems: 2.13Ghz, Intel C2D E6400, 8800gts 320mb, 1GB ddr2 533MHz.
Crysis load; 54 sec, boot 54s, crysis min 1fps, avg 23fps, COD min 28fps, avg 50fps
Upgrade to 4gb ram:
Crysis load; 48 sec, boot 47s, crysis min 13fps, avg 23fps, COD min 39fps, avg 66fps
Upgrade to 5870
crysis min 14fps, avg 23fps, COD min 63fps, avg 86fps

Basically put, Crysis on High didn't gain any max fps upgrading from a 8800GTS 320mb to a 5870, which cost 10x more.
