Default Piracy, its affect on PC Gaming - 02-18-2010, 05:37 AM

Well this is a debate that's been going on for a while now, I figured I'd see what you guys think.

Consider the games that don't have replay value, or that have very little replay value. Such as Assassin's Creed, or other console games that are ported onto the PC. These games are simply pirated as they are usually only played once.

Now the reason why games from blizzard, which are specifically for the PC do so well is because they are online games, and to play you need to purchase a CDkey. There are many ways of online verification to play these games on Battle.net or Blizzard servers, and unless you are going on private servers, a purchase is necessary.

They say that the amount of games sold for the PC is 1/10 the amount that would be sold had everyone who pirated the games bought them. With that being said, not everyone will buy games.

Of course games with a cult following are the exception, like Sims for example. The customers have a love for the game, and want to support the developers.

You provide info but no actual argument, so there isn't much of a debate ...

"They say that the amount of games sold for the PC is 1/10 the amount that would be sold had everyone who pirated the games bought them."

They can say that all they want but some people just will never buy the game. I'm sure a ton of people would try out a free corvette, but if I tried charging $70,000 for it. Not everyone is still going to buy it, even if they enjoyed the car and would love to own one.

My take on it: I pirate anything and everything, if I like the game, I buy it, if I don't I remove it off my computer.

My philosophy... demo tend to highlight the best bits of a game, and demo are rare and few these days anyways.

Thats a bold faced lie. I dare anyone to provide even remotely credible evidence to support such an absurdly high number. If PC games were really only selling 10% of what they could be selling, the industry would have collapsed years ago.

Even out of the money that is lost to piracy I would say half or less could be regained. Because I would estimate half or more of the people who pirate a game would never buy the game legitmately even if they couldn't find a pirated copy to download, they would simply give up and move on to something else, rather than actually buy the game.

Media industries, whether gaming, movies, or music try to grossly over estimate the impact pirating has on their respective industries in order to gain sympathy and support in the fight against piracy.

All that being said though, I do not support pirating games. I'm of the opinion that if a game is good enough for you to enjoy playing, than its good enough to pay for, and if a game isn't good enough to pay for, than its not good enough to bother playing it either.

Except....you have to pay for every game to find out if its really good? How do you decide what games are good before you buy it? I know quite a few games I purchased that I didn't even finish that were so horrid. There are games that are good time wasters that aren't worth paying for it. Iphone games are one of my main examples. There's a lot of games on the iphone that are moderately fun, but not worth the $1-$10 they charge for them. Also what about games that you draw on paper (tic tac toe, dot game, etc) I find them fun, but not worth any price you'd put on it. Somethings are only worth it if they are free, others are worth it even if they aren't.
