Default Battlefield 3 GPU reccomendation - 07-27-2011, 05:41 PM

So after all the dust has setttled and EA isn't very community friendly in releasing what kind of hardware would run BF3 at pretty high settings preferbly ultra or high at least, I have been searching for a good vid card that should be able to fit my Tower and and Run BF3 well.

My Current Rig is
I7-860 Quadcore
1 Tb hardrive
8 gig ram
HD 5770

I was thinking of upgrading to a Radeon 6850, but Im hoping its around the same size of the 5770 I have as I dont have much space in my tower.

so basically td;lr

Would a HD 6850 be enough to either max or at least give me a solid 60 frames on high for bf3. So far I have been looking at this GPU

This one is at Fry's pretty close to me in stock.

This one looks similar to the one on top except comes with free dirt3 but more expensive.

Oh and btw Im trying not to get a new power supply change, my 5770 uses up about 100 watts when max power and the 6850 uses about 25 more watts on max load so I rather not try to get another power Source.

Thoughts and suggestions for more cards are appreciated.

For your purpose the 6850 is a good upgrade. There's no point looking at the 6870 either because you gain little performance over the 6850. If you want a little more juice the 6850 OC's quite well so you have that option.

In the past when the 6850 was more expensive I would have recommended going for a crossfire setup with 2x5770, but now the price difference is 50-60$ between adding a 5770 and replacing it with the 6850. The additional card will take a lot more power so it won't meet your power supply restrictions.

Hope any of this helps.

Thanks for the input flux, I too was also thinking about crossfiring my 5770's but I realized that I only had 1 pcie 2.0 x16 slot. So I gotta go and do the decent single Gpu that can boost up my performance, my hd 5770 has served me well but I think I might need more power for the upcoming games this year.

Watching the Bf3 videos really makes me actually want to spend hella money on something like this because this could be the game I will be addicted too in the future.

you have 3 months till the game comes out... I'd say wait till prices drop even more which you know they will. unless its a 5870

Prices for for those cards will not drop unless for awhile. I'm a bit curious on the PSU you currently have to be worrying about 25 extra wattage?

same for me, i'm because when using one of those card's atleast 600 watt is recommanded. else your computer might crash because it cannot deliver enough power

had that so i'm speaking with experience, think my psu was barely enough. the whole screen froze and nothing worked anymore. well atleast it kept showing before it froze .

Thanks for the Input, after a little researching 600 is indeed the ideal wattage for these types of video cards. On the 6850 and 6870 they both need a recommended wattage of 600, my Measly 450 could not handle anything above the 5770 that I have currently. I guess Ill just wait till prices go down by the end of the year and just build a new rig. Thanks for the input fellow animetake citizens.

Technically its not total wattage you should be looking at for a PSU. Its the amount of voltage on the 12V rails and how many are individual. You could have a 450W PS do fine if it has enough 12V rails.

i think you are good with your current platform honestly.
i run:

vista 64 bit
550 watt power suppy
intel 9550 2.83ghz w/ 1300fsb
8 gigs ddr3 ram
300g primary and 2 2tb storage
and 1 GTX 260 oc maxcore edition card

and ive run all the current games on less than half load with max settings
dead space 2
bulletstorm
brink
bad company 2
cod
mirrors edge
crysis 2
portal 2
metro 2033
etc.

at the rate that games are progressing ill probably need to buy a new comp next year but honestly this comp has run games flawlessly for 2 years.
if anything ill just buy a bigger power supply and get another gtx 260 since they are cheap and run pretty damn well.

your GPU should do fine for BF3

i'm currently running:
7 Windows Ult
ATI 5870 1 Gb
AMD T1100 CPU @ 3.3GHz (6 cores)
8 Gb ram
875watt PSU

runs everything sweet as, but there is a downside using a 32" Tv for a monitor

but if you have a space problem with your case may need to upgrade that as well if able to, CoolerMaster RC-932-KKNI HAF Black Case is a good case and will last for a long time and plenty of room
