HoN is 30 bucks, and you get all the heroes and that's it, you never pay again so it's pretty much a bargain. LOL implemmented alot more customization for their champions which means not everyone plays the same way (ideally they would but w/e ). I've been playing LoL for almost a year now, and personally it's fun sometimes, but there's alot of bad casual players which with HoN once you get past the lower brackets you weed out easily. If you like serious dota gaming, go for HoN, if you're more of a casual player that enjoys a laugh every now and then you can start off with LoL, they're very different games and if you're coming from dota LoL is going to be a headache to get used to since there's no such thing as creep denying basically (which I find lame, catters to lower skilled players ...) anyways, that's my 2 cents.
You can easily farm IP for new champions. With daily wins and just two-to-three matches a day, by the time the new champion comes out you have more than enough. I fail to see any point saying, "You have to pay." - I've never paid once for a champion, only skins. I only pay to support a game I've come to love. Asking people a charge fee of X just to see if you like it is a horrible marketing plan. But to each their own. Now what's horrid, is asking someone to pay 30 dollars for a game they don't even know if they'd like - and to me, sorry, HoN is a complete rip off of DoTA down to the T aside from a few minor tweaks.

As they are very different games as you said you really can't compare them. However if you are asking for similar tastes to DoTA and not just a new game to enjoy for just that reason, of course HoN and other similar straight-up DoTA clones will win it. To me, LoL is DoTA, evolved, on a better platform. You don't need to pay. With all of LoL's customization, you can literally never get bored of it. If I had every champion to begin with, why play? You need goals to work towards, or if you see a champion you want to play it's fun to try them while they're free to see if it's worth spending IP on.

I also fail to see how creep denying can cater to lower skill players or not. Players with skill will play regardless of how the lanes are pushed or not depending on the situation - in my opinion, creep denying is arguably a nuisance - deny and sit at a turret, and avoid any form of confrontation in your lane? THAT to me sounds like lower skilled players, not willing to commit to fights.. Also, if you've played LoL enough you'd know Deny Plank (Gangplank) is a pro-minion denier if that's your thing.

In both games, you'll get noobs. In both games, you'll have the gap between decent player and PRO player. To me, League of Legends just offers so much more with reason to play, whereas HoN as you pointed out gives you all the champions - and charges you 30$ for it. Not a good deal, imo.

Tl;dr I respect your right to your own opinion, I just disagree whole-heartedly. All around LoL is a better game. Riot did a good job, imo.

^This.

I have Akali; will I get Nurse Akali skin? HELL YES. Do I really need it? Not really...I can do just well without paying but LoL is a game, imo, worth paying more than $30 for.

I play free StarCraft 2(Chinese beta is free) so that is saying something.

I always thought the deny mechanism is a bit weird... Killing your own guys???
It only makes sense in a few champions and League of Legend did it correctly for Gangplank.

Did I ever mention that female heroes in HoN all look as ugly as Sivir???

I'm playing LoL until Dota 2 comes out, which should be epic. I had a few friends just get HoN (they were having a sale of some sort) but after hearing so much negative stuff about the HoN community I figured I'd pass. I've played the LAN crack a little, but it didn't really make a big impression. I dunno, If they end up having a lot of fun with it I might join in eventually.
To me the LoL community just seems a little more forgiving towards new players and such.

I have played all 3 games: DOTA/HON/LOL. Up from this 3, now I prefer HoN the most.

DOTA is original, but it's for old school hardcore players :d With our fast gaming evolution, DOTA feels like "wooden" game (if you know what I mean) after you play HoN or LoL for some time.

LoL is "cartoonish" game and for me who played HoN for the past 3 years, seems a bit messy when it comes to items and heroes >< Everything else is almost the same as DOTA and HoN.

HoN as it was said, it is a clone to DOTA, though it has own changes in heroes, spells and items. But for me who liked DOTA back in the days, it's really easy to use my knowledge from the game and add it to HoN gameplay. Which makes the game even more fun. The only problem is that you have to pay, but it's One-Time-Pay, on special offers you can get it for 10$, so for the quality of the game and frequent updates I guess it's fine. All other things like: skins, icons and so on, you can get with Silver coins which you get for play Match Making games or you can buy them if you have money.

Played HON and just doesn't please me the way LoL pleases me. I play Nasus, Jarvan and Twisted Fate as my mains. I just like how it's free and never gets boring for me.

LoL is the best! may I try persuading you to join the chinese server .
HoN is just a DotA clone...

LoL is a simpler version of DotA it makes the game more user friendly like when someone in DotA has a mega lead they pretty much are invincible but in LoL you always have a chance.

I will just leave this here... [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

No, because Tencent is just robbing money off the hands of players.

In closed beta, I tried for TWO MONTHS to get the code in China...but still did not.

Being skilled in LoL makes a difference greater than being skilled in HoN imho.
And why play with people that only care for the K/D ratio?
I play LoL with my bro and all of our friends. All on skype and recording vids. Super fun.
We even made a channel in yt but anw. You can even try totally stupid builds on some champions in LoL without caring about any ratio. My bro made a full AD/attack speed Kassadin (usually a mage nuker) once and he pretty much dominated. He even tried him as a hybrid and that worked too.
