'Titans of Steel Warring Suns' by Matrix Games is a wonderful and *free* game available for download. It is not everyone's cup of tea because it is very tactical, and (sort-of) turn-based. Too, there is some learning curve time. It seems to be based somewhat on Fasa's BattleTech miniature rules from the 80's. It can be played solo against the AI or online vs. humans.

It has a tutorial that walks you through the basics. I recommend that you do it and then browse through the manual a bit before you generate your team of 'jocks'. You will need a leader, and a businessman, and a mechanic. If you don't know what that means by the time you generate your team, then spend another 15 minutes with the manual to figure it out. It will save you time and money.
