Default Manga or Manwha? - 12-12-2009, 07:04 PM

I have seen a lot of people reading series which they claim to be manga but are actually manwha(korean comics), i have made this mistake in the past before i knew what manwha was. Have you also made this mistake?

it kinda pisses me off that when i was 14/13 (now 17) i bought manwha thinking it was manga from tokyopop 'king of hell' to be exact was the one i bought. some people don't mind but i for one like to keep my collection strictly japanese thats why i keep comics not japanese manga off my manga shelf

here are some manwha titles you may have read thinking they were manga are king of hell, priest, VERITAS is a MANWHA! but people talk about it like its manga, im sick of people calling manwha manga there are clear differences you can spot between the two like the authors name and the sound effects will have korean characters.

Who care's really I just call them all manga because I am to lazy to double check if it was made in Korean, China or Japan. They are all pretty much the same style with a few little quirks like if you read it left to right or right to left and different character name's. As long as the story is good and the art is up to par I don't care where it's made.

This is my first post but this was something I had to chime in on. Is there a difference between Manga and Manhwa, technically there is. Does it matter, not really. There some cultural differences like, Koreans read left to right (like most westerners) and how age is calculated (Korean age you are considered 1yo when your born and your one year older on the new year.) The art styles and the stories however are nearly identical.

In fact many Korean authors and artists make Japanese Manga. Im Dal Young is a great example of an author who does both Manhwa and Manga. Kuro Kami, Onihime VS and Freezing are all his Japanese titles. The Legend of Maian, Aflame Inferno and Zero are some of his Manwha titles. Unbalance X Unbalance is one of his most popular works and it started out as a Manwha and is getting finished as a Manga because the Korean publishing company that hosted it as a Manwha went bankrupt and once the legal stuff cleared over a Japanese publisher is picking it up so he can finish the story.

it all boils down to content... you either enjoy it or not
