There is live action TV series that have come out recently: Jin. An HD version is also available.

Anyway, the main idea is that Jin (the main character) is a neurosurgeon from the 20th century is sent back in time to 19th century Tokyo Japan. The circumstance is weird, but not that important (at least in the drama, it is actually an important plot device in the manga).

Jin has to struggle to live in a society that have very little on the modern conveniences he is so use to. Worse, his Hippocrates oath pushes him to constantly help people tot he best of his abilities with the things available in 19th century Japan. Over time Jin will gain the respect and friendship of many people, including important people of that time.

As expected there is very little violence in this series, but it has a lot of heart. And Jin's struggle between wanting to help versus changing the future is an interesting situation, and I never found it to be ridiculous. So it is worth a watch. Or even better yet: read the manga, it kept me spellbound until I read out of tankubons and the series is still continuing.

i just finished watching this series a couple of weeks ago. It was actually good. It had a good storyline.

Jin aired locally here with subs and I just happened to catch episode 1 and was instantly hooked. I love time travel stories anyway, so I was probably already predestined to like this series. Plus it had Haruka Ayase in it acting all shy and sweet and stuff, so that was a bonus. LOL. I don't like the sight of blood however and this show had some major surgery going on. LOL. And only after the fact did I realize that the two main stars are the same ones from the movie Ichi. LOL. I cannot wait until season 2... I wanna see how everything turns out.

For that year JIN won the Japanese TV Drama Academy Awards for Best Drama, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Direction. It pretty much won everything and is considered to be the best J-Drama of 2009.
