Sorry to offend. I do not stereotype rednecks; however most non-southerners have a tendency to hold to the stereotypical cartoon image that we are uneducated and unhygienic for some reason. And no I am neither a flat footed city girl that sits at a desk nor am I just ignorant. I have just met too many people that as soon as they hear someone is from the south they develop the opinion that because of the way we talk and live we are highly prejudice and have lower levels of intelligence. Frankly your zeroing in on the redneck portion of the post is offensive. The whole idea was to try to dispel the idea that we in the south are rednecks (which in and of itself is an offensive term that indicates that a person is uneducated, bigoted, and loutish). Perhaps because of the way people have portrayed us historically many of us have embraced the term redneck to make it our own as a way to identify us and our cultural beliefs. Hopefully that is what you have done. Otherwise you are admitting to just being a bigoted lout. Personally I grew up in a poor area on a dirt road. My parents, like everyone else in my area, wanted to do better for their family. We had to farm for our food and raise animals/hunt to eat much of the time. And yes I know how to dress both a chicken and a deer. Trust me, no one knows more than the people in my area what poverty and hard work are.

I don't care what the others assume a redneck to be due to the comedy as of late that use the term loosely to suit their own sales. But the term redneck is a term to be proud of in the south due to its history. People who were originally classified as rednecks were the farmers and laborers of the south that worked outdoors for the full day in the blistering heat and dry humidity. They were the original settlers that helped build the land to what it is today to support all their families and people elsewhere. They were called rednecks due to the tan they inherited by the sun on the back of the their necks. They are a proud people and shouldn't be rediculed simply because of the what local tv and broadcast uses the name to imply for comedy.

Sadly I find both of them enjoyable. Does that make me a masochist(no not in a sexual way)? Although my current favorite is Ralphie May. |
