Default Oh wow, this guy is totally rad - 12-27-2010, 10:50 PM

My name is Alex, and as much as I hate to contradict myself, I'm not rad. I'm sorry for all the disappointment, but I have to be honest else our entire relationship will of been built on a lie.

ANYWAY back to the introduction. I'm what you would consider a recently rediscovered anime fan. I've known about them for ages, but I just wasn't able to watch more. I've only seen about 15 animes in total(not counting OVA's), and the first anime I ever saw was Neon Genesis Evangelion, which I saw in 2003 on CN's Toonami(omg rip). Needless to say that at the age of 11, it freaked me out.

Over the next couple of years I would continue to see more "commercialized"(as in extremely popular English dubbed animes) animes such as Dragon Ball Z, Yu-Gi-Oh(there was nothing good on) and the almighty Pokemon(which ended up becoming crap around the 150th episode mark). Fast forward to 2008, and prepare for awesome. This is the year that I rediscovered anime, by means of a friend of course. The anime was none other than Chobits, and after watching it. I was hooked! I moved onto .hack, then Great Teacher Onizuka. I was having a blast watching all of this awesome anime, and I wanted to keep watching more but I just couldn't because of two reasons, A. I was flat broke, and didn't have the bandwidth to "obtain" them via the internet, and B. I was a Student at the time.

Both of those reasons are now but a distant memory and I couldn't be happier! Now before I finish this post off, I just want to make this clear. I prefer dubs simply because I'm lazy, and reading is an awful lot of effort.

welcome, you should try to finish at least one subbed series, reading subtitles becomes second nature after a while and you dont even realize youre doing it.

I know some people get tired of reading subtitles (and I'm talking about other stuff as well such as movies, dramas etc...)

But seriously, if you get used to it, you will find subtitles really easy to read and watch at the same time!!!

Anyway, welcome to AnimeTake ^^

Should of said this in my initial post but I watched Chobits with subs. I tried the dub after watching a few episodes and liked it up until I heard chii's voice. It just doesn't sound right in English. Personally I don't see what the big deal is with the hole sub v dub debate. It's a personal preference, and the majority of the dubs that are commonly referenced aren't as bad as there made out to be.

^Until you hear one of the characters sound like shit or the whole acting of the series sucks so hard, you'll definitely pick up the subbed version.
Btw, welcome to AT.

well, I really dont have anything against dubs, and I dont get why some people hate them so much. But the fact of the matter is that youre gonna miss out on a lot of really awesome anime if you only watch dubs. Thats why I told you to try subs out.

Welcome to AT............

Trust me as you watch more and more subbed versions of shows you will enjoy them much more.

The issue of subbed vs dubbed can be easy to understand when you look at the principle target that the show is aimed at. Dubbed anime is focused on a younger audience then it's subbed counterpart. In the US for instance a shows target audience can be anywhere from 5 to 10 years younger then it is in Japan. This is one of the main factors regarding the lack of interest in anime for older audiences in the US. The subbed/original versions are clearly aimed at an older audience. This is why you will find appreciation for anime with a much older audience in Japan.

I believe that if older audiences had the patience to watch subbed anime you would have a much broader market in the places like the US.

I have watched the same anime in both dubbed and subbed and quite frankly I have been insulted at the level maturity that comes across in most dubbed versions.

There are exceptions to this, such as series like Ghost In The Shell and movies like Akira. However, sadly these are few and far between.
