Default Program for Tablet - 05-13-2010, 08:29 AM

Just got a Tablet (Wacom Bamboo) and wondering what program is best for drawing anime/manga and probably chibi stuff. Is Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop good?

I really like openCanvas.

It seems easier to control the pen then in Photoshop for me.

Paint Tool SAI is pretty good as well.

Paint tool SAI is imba, but there is quite a lot of features missing that are common in the more costy program such as Photoshop or Corel Painter.

As far as I know, Illustrator is a "common folk" version of Photoshop (a.k.a. normal human beings can afford it, unlike Photoshop which in my country costs 1 000 euro for the newest version), but logically, there is huge amount of features missing.

I recommend you either Photoshop CS3 (it's really amazing. As for CS4, I'm not quite sure about the truth behind the numerous complaints for both crashing and it not working as intended since I didn't try it myself...CS3 <3 ) or the aforementioned Paint Tool SAI.

All in all it depends on what exactly you want to do with it. If just basic coloring - SAI (of course you can do high-end art with this, but lacking textures and text etc.), if really textured, detailed or w/e art, then Photoshop.

EDIT: Also forgot to say, that in Photoshop you can download shitloads of custom brushes from many sites, many of them oriented for manga arting (like these: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] , but there are also completely free ones on that site).

Hope it was of some help. And good luck arting :3

Actually, the difference is that Illustrator is a vector (uses math to describe how to draw the graphics rather then just saying pixel 1 is in square 1 and blue) graphics program while Photoshop is a raster (works in pixels) graphics program. Both are aimed at professionals but produce different kinds of art. You would use Photoshop for photos and other graphics but you would use Illustrator for a logo, especially if you don't know what size the image will be used at. A A4 page won't become pixelated in Illustrator if resized to A2 but it's more difficult to do the fine details.
