if i were you, i'd just use scrap paper and pencils. Do you have any manga? If you do, I suggest you pick a character and use it as a model. Once you have that character down, pick a different one. Once you get through 5 or 6 characters, take characteristics from each one and create a new character. Don't worry about shading or coloring at first, just get the drawing down.

My model for my picture had most of her body blocked because of a text bubble and the right side of her hair/body was cut off by the panel, so I tried to imagine the right side of the body. I guess I could go back to basics like half a year ago, but I really like the dark look on some of the eyes I've drawn since and regular #2 can't do what I'd want. I'll try to diversify who I draw though; thanks. I'll try not to give up :3 I'll have to find a character with really glass like eyes :3 |

the biggest weakness in this drawing is obviously the neck and shoulders. You may be going for the anime and not the real-person style, but the actual shape of a human body is usually human enough in anime as well, so you would do well to look at an actual human subject (or photo) while drawing to get the shape down. Aside from that, I think you should scale it down a little so you can get more of her on the page. You can't even see the top nor both sides of her head fully. Give yourself room to give her cat ears if you want to make her into a catgirl
- easier to draw than human ears anyway, though of course you've elected to cover that area with her hair anyway.

I have no excuse for the body because even if I worked on it as much as her face it would still be bad, so it isn't that I just didn't spend a lot of time. There were weird indentions on her body and I gave up on them when I couldn't do them - between neck and shoulder - I even took my shirt off infront of the mirror to try and see how it would be. Thanks again. Someone else replied :3~ Quote:
Thanks for the pic; I've tried some like that before too and I'll try again. I just prefer my special glass look. I even like the "hollow" style - I believe a character in Maria+Holic always had that look and plenty of yandere girls have it when they go psycho mode. |

I was going to edit my post, but - this is what I meant. Between her neck and shoulders, she didn't have a "CONCAVE" indention - it was just two lines =/. |

In no way am I trying to brag, but I'm saying this as credibility... I used to be a student at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, so I'm relatively familiar with drawing things. Sadly, the anime style wasn't employed there, so I ended up just teaching myself. Shortly after that I lost interest and haven't drawn since.
Anyways, I grew up on comic books before anime so that was the style I drew in and where I learned some basics such as a way to roughly gage a person's dimensions when drawing is to remember that the distance from the ankle to the top of the kneecap is the same from the knee to the beltline, and from the ankle to the beltline should be one head over their head (if that made sense) There is the "W" rule, which applies to drawing a man's upper body where the line from the side of the pectoral runs into the bicep. I guess you'd have to see it on paper. Trying to explain it is impossible. Best tip I can give you though is: Study anatomy!!! The problem I saw in your drawing and what I see a lot in amateur art is how mannequin-like the anatomy is. If the line of a person's shoulder is one way when the arm is at their side, then that same shoulder line can't be drawn the same way if their arm is raised. A person's anatomy flexes, twists, and changes shape depending on body position. Understanding and applying that knowledge will greatly improve your artwork. This should come before anything else, like "how do I draw the eyes" because that's the easy stuff. Nice, sparkly eyes on a mannequin looking body is still a bad drawing. |
