Default My Visual Novel project - 04-27-2009, 06:32 PM

For my end of year project for college I have decided on making my own visual novel game, so far I wanted to get some character concepts done so today I worked on making one of my characters expression sheet.

Here it is, the girl in question I named Misaki:

Feedback would be much appreciated. Since this will be my big finished project for college and I want to make it as good as I can.

Harsh truth:
There's room to improve your drawings.

Helpful advice:
In order of importance
Storyline > Programming > BGM + BGCG + Character design

Basic character designs should be closely related to your storyline. Some expressions may not actually be needed for different characters. Depencding on how much time you have, the story may be either short or long. The heart for any VN is: Good End & Bad End. You could add a Normal End, Great End, Alternative End, etc. but that all depends on the scenarios/characters you have already composed.

Programming the path of the VN is the next step. You don't want it to go into an infinite loop that never ends. The font and structure must be easily read such that the whole thing flows like a river. Having different endings, you must plan out several paths the protagonist must take in order to achive either ending.

BGM, BGCG and character design comes after the storyline is complete. This is because it's easier to visualise how every character would look like, unless you've already planned them in advance. Every named character needs to at least have a background to build upon. The more important the character, the more info required. The reason for this, is so you can limit the number of facial expressions/poses for every character that will show up.

That's all I can tell you for now. This is from some of the research I've collected when I was trying to create my own VN. Completed all the characters and background info (no drawings) but never started writing the storyline. Still have the plot of the VN, but I'll leave for a time when I feel like going back to writing stories...

Heh, I'm already well aware I need to improve with my art skills some more, it's hard drawing on your computer, for me it's still hard even with a tablet. But yeah, I should get a story down.

As Hirohata said, I think you should first focus on the storyline, than the programming is next. Other than that is beyond me lol

What class is this for? a arts or computer class?

Here's some sources you can look into, might help =)

If you have access to a scanner, drawing with paper and pencil is always the best way to go before using a tablet. Here's a great free [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]~

I think you should draw on paper and scan it for the best result. Tablets are quite hard for beginners.

Have never gotten my scanner to work, it's a Printer scanner hybrid which really annoys me whenever I tried to scan the scanner never showed on the list.

What type of scanner-printer did you use? Canon? HP? Or others?
