A lot of the people who download do it because they don't have the money to buy. Probably have their hands full with their current job, making ends meet and whatnot, or can't find a job in the recession. Many more feel very strongly that, because one's 'culture capital' is important, one shouldn't limit this to the size of one's wallet i.e. a person who can't afford to buy a CD shouldn't have to go without listening to the music, especially since art was meant for everybody to enjoy, and music is by default an artform.
I'm not saying buying is a bad thing, but it shouldn't be required by any stretch of the imagination.
