I have taken 4 Japanese courses in the school I used to be in High School. They were pretty basic, but the latest one I took was a bit more complex.
In my opinion, Japanese grammar is pretty easy. I learn and remember most of the vocabulary from what I hear in anime.
The commonly difficult part in learning Japanese is the kanji. ;| I can write in hiragana and katakana just fine, but ugh kanji..
I know several, but it's easy to forget.

I tried online lessons but I did not like them.
A friend who knows a lot of Japanese gave me copies of a book to learn. Kinda basic but, it's still a challenge for a 'beginner'.

Oh, and I'm fluent at writing and speaking but, slow at reading.

Haha, sounds like the American stereotype I once read some time ago.

BS. ;D

Oh, Lord. o_o You already passed level 4 ?! (Even though it's beginner. XD) I took a test like the JLPT, but all levels combined. It was so hard and I failed horribly. :/
You take Japanese classes, I suppose?

I'm currently taking Elementary Japanese at my college, and getting a near perfect A (But it's just the basics, so, lol). If you are motivated and pay attention in the begging especially, it is not that hard. I found it actually some-what easy. So long as you learn to read Hiragana pretty well and as the person above me said learn the grammar/sentence structure, then your off to a good start.

Then again I really like the book I have, and our teacher rocks, so that may play a part in learning it well. I think most of it though is having good material with great explanations and examples as well as just simply the drive to learn. Because I really don't put in more than 3 hours a week (Though I'm sure that will change the higher the level I get).

To me learning Japanese will be easy, its similar to Arabic(e.g forming a sentence) which i am familiar with in a few months when i will have the option of taking it in my second year of university .

I took a couple of conversation classes and an elementary Japanese class at the local community college. I've not taken the next class, because learning kanji was really starting to kick my ass. I was getting the hang of it, but it was taking me longer than the rest of the class. Luckily it ended before I got too far behind(still managed to get a 3.5 somehow....). At some point I'd like to continue if I can. I'm just so loaded down with other classes, I don't know when it'd happen

i was born in korea, and so, japanese, being very similar to the south korean language, is easy to understand; some words are the same, and the sentence structure is near identical. xD

Lucky you I'm a little jealous
Wonder if there are japanese people on this forum?
For the japanese language programs I think Rocket Japanese is better than Rosetta Stone. Too bad it is near impossible to get a crack for it
