I recently switched from Win7 to Ubuntu for my Media Notebook... The default player is pretty weak and mplayer works great... But for some reason it doesn't stream properly from my NAS... But VLC is doing that job just fine, so I am quite content with switching the players.

yup, although I use mplayer2. It doesn't fail when you use vdpau and 10bit video like mplayer does.

Not at all what you meant but I just found out the crappy Blu-ray player I bought around Christmas time can play MKVs from a flash drive. Kinda cool, but now I don't think I'll ever get around to throwing together a HTPC. Though I still haven't tested it with 10 bit yet.
