Default Do you like watching "anime" adaptions? - 02-10-2012, 04:25 PM

Basically, do you like watching anime adaptions of manga/LN/games? for example, are you a type of person who prefers anime over manga or vice versa? do you watch anime first and then pick up the original work after? or do you like both of them? etc...

Every season, over 80% of new anime series are adaptions of manga, LN and games (excluding original work). Regardless of whether we have read/played the original work, MOST of us just watch it since its "anime". However, we sometimes drop it halfway or not even bother watching it because "its unwatchable" or "it doesn't follow the storyline from the original work" etc. You all know what I'm talking about...

For my case, on one hand, nearly 70% of the LN/manga that I've read and turned into anime, were a complete failure. This also applies to all of the VN that I've played. I'm pretty sure most of you will agree with me as you have your own favorite manga/LN/games adapted into anime and in the end, it turned out to be shit. Very disappointing indeed...
On the other hand, I always enjoy watching new anime series that I have never KNOWN before. I'm talking about the series that I have not read/played the original work before and just watched the anime without any knowledge of it. Then after watching the series, I urge myself to pick up the original material and thus, this is one of my ways of picking up manga/LN.

As a result, if you ask me "Do you like watching anime adaptions?", I say half-half... I like watching "animefied" manga/VN/games at the same time hating it as well. Of course, not all of them are bad and some anime producers work hard on it to stay as fresh and not losing the track. Though, yeah... I've seen lots of disappointing anime works and I get to the point where I want to question the producer - "Why bother animating the series if your going to be half-assed?"

So as you can see that's just me right there. I'm sure your ideas of watching anime adaptions would be different so please share your thoughts here.

It depends on the circumstances. Asura Cryin' LN and School Rumble manga had left me a good impression on their anime adaptations, but felt like it could have been more. I loved how Gungrave and Clannad became anime, but I hated how they messed up with Black Cat anime compared on it's great manga. That's IMHO.

IDK how to react on Eroge to EroAnime adaptations, but I'm never too disappointed on them at least.

We all have an ideal image in our head as we read through any written work. This ideal image is unique for each person. When you combine this with factors such as story compression and character exclusion any adaptation whether it be an anime or live action will fall short of it's written counter part. I guess you could label it as pleasing all of the ppl some of the time.

My personal feeling is that it takes time to get to know characters and the events that make up a story. In this regard the written word is far superior at conveying the nuisances that pull you into a story. The interesting dichotomy is that, in most cases we would like to see our favorite manga or novel turned into a movie or anime. Only to see it fall short of our expectations.

Although there are exceptions to every rule if you have high expectations for an adaptation from a written work you are sure to be disappointed.

I don't really care. I don't live in Japan so I usually end up hearing about the anime before the manga/game/novel it was adapted from. So if there is source material or if an anime is completely original is all the same to me if I am not familiar with the source. Anime original shows and adaptations both can fail but adaptations give me the option finding a story that I might like better.

Meh, too lazy to read the OPs wall of text, I'll wait for the movie version to come out.

For Visual novel adaptations, I prefer original one if possible. I don't really like way they usually choose one route in anime version. for manga... Just no.

I've stopped wtaching Bleach/Naruto and only read manga now-a-days. Too much fillers in manga adaptations kill the possibly good story which original have.

LN-adaptations; ToraDora did that part pretty good. But sadly anime versions usually are left mid-way to real story. Original works are pretty much best what you can find, imho.

Hohohoho~ Good question. For there are a lot of variables. For the anime's she's watched that she learned are adaptions it depends on what ending they go with. For example, Requiem of the Phantom anime adaption chose the worst possible ending to go with in Bo & Fire-nii (brother who introduced her to the anime) 's opinion. CAL FTW <3. But in Steins;Gate ending for that anime was just epic.

Bo had another thought... but she lost it. = =||

@Tennouji, so would you say it's not worth it to watch the anime adaption of Black Cat? Bo watched the first episode at least over a year ago and forgot to continue. Also knows it's differs from the manga in the beginning at least...

Any adaption regardless of it's Manga>Anime/LA or vice versa has to be done well before anything.

Most people seem to feel Airgear TV was horrible in comparison to the manga, so the manga is the preferred version assuming there's not a jump in quality with the OVAs or movies.Alternatively People love both the Soul Eater Anime and Manga despite the differences because they feel both were strong stories individually. Most every videogame to movie adaption has been shit with a couple of exceptions and that's because they're often never given the time and energy to make them feel like quality productions. American comics have only just recently cracked that glass ceiling in regards to quality and even they cant always win an audiance even with 100million dollar budgets.

So ultimately it depends on how well any given property is made, If it's good or at least has some value in a "so bad it's good" sort of way it can be enjoyable.
