Default Tribler: A different way of torrent sharing - 02-09-2012, 11:32 PM

I don't know how many of you already heard of this, or if I am talking about old news. but anyway....
Tribler is a torrent client with a twist. Instead of just using the current BitTorrent protocol, it uses a decentralized overlay network for content searching. This basically means that it doesn't have the need for trackers like piratebay or nyantorrents. It is nearly impossible to take down. The only way would be to remove the program from every computer on the earth or to take the internet down. Not even the makers of the program would be able to prevent torrents from being shared once the program is on someones computer. You can search any torrent with the program without to look at a browser.

Also the fact that it's completely open source will allow anyone to make a new client that works on the same protocol and network.
To me this sounds pretty good. Do you guys think it has a future? I downloaded it to try it out. The interface is easy to use but it still lacks animes. I can find the new naruto episodes but not the new guilty crown yet (for example). It will only work if it becomes more popular, but it has potential. If fansubbers would upload their animes to the network, I can see it replacing nyantorrents.

Even if it's not Triblers, this way of file sharing seems to me more efficient then the current torrent method. With ever increasing pressure from the entertainment industry and governments on torrent sites. This seems to be a solution. No one can be held responsible for what a user uploads, and it can not be taken down.

Not going to happen unless Nya is taken down. Also Tribler has it's problems. As you pointed out you could not find Guilty Crown. So how do you introduce new files? It is torrented then added to Tribler. If you torrented the file why bother to use Tribler. Granted if it gets enough attention then you might have ppl willing to take these extra steps but I don't think it's at that point yet. This added to the fact that it still has (last I heard), upload performance problems makes it a poor choice to replace both torrents and magnet links. At least for now.

I wouldn't say that it will replace the current torrent methods yet, but I do see it potentially becoming popular as time progresses.

Where do the torrented files orginate from? The sub groups. If Tribler caught on, the sub groups could simply release episodes directly to Tribler, eliminating that extra step.

Still though, I think Magnet link are the way to go for now.

For me, the file status info updates irregularly while the download is still progressing. Also, for some reason my hard drive activity light would always stay lit until I exited the application. Maxed my connection speed out though.

Like Conduit already said, subgroups can just as easily use tribler as nyantorrent, or both. Also I am more interested into the actual way of sharing, not the client itself. Since its opensource, clients like utorrent will also be able to use the same network.
But yea I don't see it replacing nyantorrents anytime yet. But who knows how things are in a few years. I just meant to say that this way of sharing seems to have potential. You can still use nyantorrents with Tribler. And I don't know why it should be slower then utorrent. However utorrent is lightweight where Tribler isn't, that's why utorrent is still my first choice atm. But I'm going to keep a eye on it.
