Default 1080p? - 01-26-2012, 11:50 AM

So Horriblesubs has started ripping 1080p but i tried them out on my 47" HDTV and the quality is horrible. It's worse than normal 720p...not sure why but the 1080p is all blocky and pixellated around the edges. Definitely not 1080p quality...

Blame CR. 1080p is an upscale from 720p anyway. There's hardly a difference.

But there is. The 720p is upscaled too but the quality is much better than the 1080p...so i guess the quality degradation is cuz it's an upscale of an upscale? >.<

Although it's kinda weird cuz back when i was a CR subscriber i'd play their HD full screen on my HDTV as well (streaming through the site) and the quality was superb...maybe it's Horriblesubs source? Or their encoding after they rip it?

In my opinion,

As you say, its pretty much an upscale of an upscale. You'll only get the 1080p quality you're expecting when the bluray comes out. A 720p BD is better than a tv quality 1080p, so naturally the 1080p BD will be what you're looking for.

As for when you were a CR subscriber, this whole 1080p thing only started very recently like this January 1st or something around the start of this season. The HD you streamed back then was not of 1080p but most likely 720p unless they were shows that were of complete status and had better quality because of its DVD and/or BD release being archived on their selections.

In fact, there can be also a source of good 1080p TV-rips. It's just that there's no demand on it, that's why raw providers tend to encode their releases first on 720p.

And just for the record: I doubt about 1080p DVD rips. Not sure about 720p DVD rips, but I knew I saw some which were around 500+ vertical height.

Actually... Since they rip from CR, and CR gets the files directly from the anime companies I would expect them to be somewhat better than TV rips. Makes me think that someone in that chain doesn't know how to encode.
