Depends what you are into. Osaka if you want to see some good tech. I believe Sony Headquarters is there and their 3D cinema was just amazing.
Tokyo is an all rounder. You might not see much at this time of the year. I went around December and the Japanese were staying warm in their houses. Won't see much karaoke either.
Kyoto is great if you like fashion. May have to put up with all of the non-Japanese trying to sell you useless stuff though... I would be more specific but then I'll sound racist. Kyoto also has some great sites down there as well Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the Golden Leave Temple/Castle is in Kyoto as well.
If you are traveling around the Tokyo and Kyoto regions, you must stop at Kobe. They have great meat there.

Kyoto is the best place to see traditional sites. Castles and temples etc. Good place to see Geisha too but you need a bigger budget lol. Your hotel should have plenty of guide books.
With only $800 and given the current USD to Yen conversion rate, you would seriously NEED to do some serious budgeting, because accommodation and public transport is going to eat away at your money wad very very quickly. Then you would still need money left over for your daily meals, souvenirs and entrance fees to various tourist attractions.
For accommodation try booking a place here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] or similar websites, some places are decent but you might have to share a room with several less desirable strangers (ie snoring during the night), but at least one night is cheap ranging from 2000yen to 4500 yen.
I am personally going to Japan too on the 29th, but will be staying the whole of my 18 days in greater Tokyo as I have already seen most of Japan 4 years ago. Luckily accommodation will be cheap for me as I will be staying at a friends place (free).
Good luck in your planning, Japan is a wonderful place.
@CWArishou - Thanks a lot for the heads up, never did really fancy going to Tokyo since I only have 11 days. That really limits what I can see. But Kobe sounds like a great idea to visit. I've been having a look around what exists there and that seems like a great target. Thanks for the idea. Will definitely go there for a couple of days - 5 of them definitely.
@plmko Did read what I just said? I have payed my hotel fully. I have around 800 - 1000 $ spending money for 10 days(I got more, but I want to limit myself to that). I guess it will be enough.
On the other hand I see your point, on your first visit did you see Tokyo? I plan sometime next year to go just for Tokyo during the summer time, and just for that. Figured it might be a little dead in terms of visiting.
@mpg13 Yup, will do.
@Crowbar - herp-derp?
@nick20050 Yeah... might, never a big fan of Gundam, but sure.
@Asmi ...Look, it's fine. I only bought the plane ticket on a whim since it was 500 pounds with return. So you could just be happy at the thought I will get lost somewhere in Japan.
P3P fan: I still cling to my belief - that it's better for city of shitheads to die instead of a hero.
