Default Problem: Writing subs with kanji - 10-14-2011, 09:57 AM

Recently I started translating subtitles for animes (from English) into Bulgarian and I learned a lot of things about it. How to extract the English subs from an mkv file, how to add fonts that I want to, etc. But there's one thing I have problems with and I can't seem to find an answer to it.

What do I have to do to be able to have the kanji in my .ass file before I use it to make the mkv file? For example - I take the English subs and they look fine. I see the latin and kanji symbols, no problem. But when I'm done with the translation and save the file all the kanji turns into a black squares or question marks.

I use MS Word / Wordpad / Notepad to edit the .ass file and I tried some other programs but I don't remember which. Maybe I'm just out of luck to come upon these that doesn't work or I'm not doing something correctly... I'm using Windows XP and I have installed extra languages so I can write in Japanese.

You should really use [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

It's like the best possible subtitle editing software for FREE.

You need to use UNICODE fonts to display the Kanji lines. The fonts will have the regular name like: Poopyfont and the UNICODE line will be added like Poopyfont Unicode. As long as you stick to those fonts, the Kanji will display just fine.

Any (or most) fonts with name starting with "@" like "@DFKai-SB" can be used to display Kanji in vertical (for ex, kara)
Basic fonts like "Arial" support Kanji too.

Hey guys. Thanks a lot! That was very valuable info and I managed to make my first subs with karaoke. But I noticed that if the subs are not "hardcore" (I think that was the term) the karaoke doesn't display properly. At least with me on 3 different PCs. I use K-lite full codec pack 7.X (3 different versions as I don't like to update without being necessary).

The karaoke was previously made in the English subs like this:
Quote:
Dialogue: 0,0:21:52.58,0:21:56.50,ED-rom,,0000,0000,0000,fx,{\fad(300,300)\be1\r\t(0,36 0,\1c&HFFFFFF&\3c&H484848&)}mo{\fad(300,300)\be1\r \t(360,500,\1c&HFFFFFF&\3c&H484848&)}e{\fad(300,30 0)\be1\r\t(500,1230,\1c&HFFFFFF&\3c&H484848&)}ru {\fad(300,300)\be1\r\t(1230,1370,\1c&HFFFFFF&\3c&H 484848&)}i{\fad(300,300)\be1\r\t(1370,1730,\1c&HFF FFFF&\3c&H484848&)}to{\fad(300,300)\be1\r\t(1730,1 930,\1c&HFFFFFF&\3c&H484848&)}shi{\fad(300,300)\be 1\r\t(1930,2210,\1c&HFFFFFF&\3c&H484848&)}sa {\fad(300,300)\be1\r\t(2210,2490,\1c&HFFFFFF&\3c&H 484848&)}ga {\fad(300,300)\be1\r\t(2490,3030,\1c&HFFFFFF&\3c&H 484848&)}kou{\fad(300,300)\be1\r\t(3030,3250,\1c&H FFFFFF&\3c&H484848&)}sa {\fad(300,300)\be1\r\t(3250,3410,\1c&HFFFFFF&\3c&H 484848&)}shi{\fad(300,300)\be1\r\t(3410,3800,\1c&H FFFFFF&\3c&H484848&)}ta
but instead of fading one by one (at least I think fad is for fading) first half of the subtitle row is darker than the second half. I don't understand the settings so I don't know if that's how it should look like or the problem is with me to view the karaoke correctly.

Playbacking your kara surely requires a lot of CPU and subtitle renderer will skip some (a lot) effect to keep up to video playback.
Hardsub kara-FX is nearly a must. If you want soft kara then don't use FX.
