Do you think College/University is a scam?? -

An interesting documentary I found couple of days ago in dealing with University's conspiracy (Although it focuses on America, I think this issue applies for any other countries as well, whether it is better or worse than America):
I'll keep my opinion short.
IMO, unless your going for specific career/job by focusing on that area and getting the degree, university is kind of rip off where you study at least 3/4 years average for nothing. In other words, what your studying right now doesn't contribute to your future in getting successful career and thus you won't have guaranteed job.
In my case, I'm currently studying Bachelor of International Studies where it looks into the world issues and related kind of stuff and really, even though I manage to get the degree for this course, my chance of getting a career based on my degree is slim since my course is "broad" where it doesn't focus on specific area.
Though, I've took this course because I like learning about Japan and since I'm majoring Japanese right now and I'm excited go for an exchange student to Japan in my fourth/fifth year, however this really doesn't contribute to my future of getting a stable career.
I sometimes wonder why did I even take this course if the chance of getting a stable job is slim?? pretty dumb ay??
Unless I transfer to other course that focuses on specific area of study such as medicine, education (teacher) etc... but I'm not planning to transfer so yeah...
But hey, I'm still in first year and I'm inexperienced with everything so my opinion can be vague but, for what I have experienced during my short uni life, this is my impression of University/college.
Anyway, what's your thoughts about going to college/university??
P.S/EDIT: Oh, and I DEFINITELY agree on Textbook costs -_-;; FML...

I never really understood colleges, where im from its common sense to send your child after high school to a technical institute (they are mostly free, and really different if you compare to America's ITT, you still get a job degree though), i guess it's because we got shit economy :c
I don't think it's a rip off, it may have increased in price way to much compared to the average salary, but it's still not a rip off for most people. I want to become an engineer and there's no way I could do that without college. But, for the people that just go to college for the sake of going to college (not getting an education for their job), then I guess that's a rip off. But for most people, it's not.
College is free in Sweden, you just gotta get the accepted grades from highschool. Every highschool (i think) in Sweden, has a person who makes the choice of graduation easier. Judging what you are good at, and what you want to do, he/she tips you a fitting education to look forward to.
In Australia it's a fucking rip off. Just enrolled into 1 unit cost me about $800. I've also talked to graduates they say you don't even use most of the stuff you learn in Uni.

Yep, it sure is. I'm from Australia as well and yeah... its really fucked up -_-;;
Maybe I should go to TAFE instead?? XD

It's ripoff for sure but if everyone could afford college it would cheapen the degree for everyone that already has a degree.
Think of all the garbage classes you had to take. If I hadn't had Spanish in high school I would have had to take a certain number of foreign language classes. I think Comp. Programming 1 counted as a foreign language somehow. I took that. I'm obviously no programmer and I can't speak Spanish.
Freshmen seminar. One day in class we took a tour of the campus. Now in itself a tour is helpful and shows you where important things on compus are, such as the enrollment offices. Think about for a sec....I had to know where the enrollement office was to enroll in the class to begin with. As for the rest of the tour...I already spent like 3 days (a long weekend) in a huge done up orientation. Oh and this "tour" wasn't the first day of the seminar class.
I don't think it's a rip-off at all. Studies have shown, at least in America, those with a college degree make on average a million dollars more in their lifetime than those who don't have a college degree, which more than covers the cost of college itself.
Not in my case. Even if in 20 years whatever I learned in university would be totally obsolete, I would still have my degree which would still enable me to exercise my profession.
Also I pay almost nothing, so it's all good.
Maybe yours is a scam, and that would suck. I would suggest you to find another one =\
