I think that what is taught in college/university isn't, but what they charge is.

For me it is kind of a rip-off, there are so much compulsory courses I don't even need in the department I want to graduate in/work in, but courses which would be valuable for the future are elective (or have extra fees).

I'm looking at you quantum mechanics - I hate you!

it depends what you are doing, some can be acquired by experience and need to be learned. Then you have to keep up with the development as you might need to adapt. what you are studying now could be outdated by the time you graduated. You might need to start thinking to use your skills abroad.

I have a general degree that doesn't really help me far as doing my job, but I got a job based on it because I graduated Summa Cum Laude honors. Despite the fact that most of my knowledge of the subject came outside of college. It helped validated my knowledge to him. It also showed I had a good head on my shoulders. The only reason I know this is because he commented on how impressed he was with my high GPA during the interview. I started out at 20 dollars an hour or 3200 a month gross with my first job.

Anyway, I recommend certification for business and non-engineering IT majors over degrees. The certifications take significantly less time to get. They mostly cost only a few hundred bucks, and you learn more indepth knowledge of your subject area then an undergraduates course would cover. Besides, I'm still having to get the certifications even with the degree. You might as well get the certs then try to get a job.If you cant, big whoop go to college it isn't hard for 80% of the majors. The Medical and Engineering related degrees are the only ones I think absolutely require college.

Besides a lot of companies pay the cost of more advanced certs later on.

The piece of paper will get you in the door, that is about it (though nowadays with the job market as it is it is mostly in who you know)

I don't believe it's a scam, but there is a problem with the types of people who pursue it.

It's my observation that those who seek higher education do so because their parents gave them an ultimatum: get a job or higher education. Unsurprisingly, they will choose higher education, because frankly, it's 2+ more years of leeching off parents.

Even worse are those who also take advantage of financial aid and sign up for, in my opinion, useless classes that may not even be completed.

The rare and noble few who don't follow that path, usually end up back with parents anyways, only now with massive amounts of debt and an even smaller few are able to dig themselves out. Don't let internet dwellers with baseless tales of success after higher education fool you. :l

I don't necessarily think it's an outright scam, since they arn't tricking you or anything...but i would say that they are charging way more than is needed...the prices are a real off-put-er for me...

And also i've been hearing a lot of people just don't even use their degrees after graduation...so then they've just gone and wasted all that money...

And also the quality of some of the lectures i got whilst at uni could be questionable...i felt like i wasn't quite getting what i was paying for...

You want to know why prices are so high?

Because of student loans - backed by the government. If you got rid of government intervention you would see prices drop dramatically (that is, no one would be able to afford to go to school and enrollment would drop 95%, no students no tuition therefore they would have to lower prices)

Look it's common sense. Seriously, if you pay to go take easy crap and dick around you wont get much out of it. If you take the hardest and most relevant courses to your trade you will get a great deal out of it.

No one going to baby you in the higher education realm like in high school. No one gonna sit there and make you to take this because it's the best. Most students go and drink and party and take the easiest pos courses they can take while still getting their degree title.

Alot of courses in college are electives with in a category of courses. My degree was 50% electives w/ Business Electives, IT electives, and General Elective. You can take dirt easy courses in all of those and get your credits, but did you learn anything useful? Well, that's up to you. My general electives were spent in linux and system admin classes. I could of just as easy taken gardening 101 or bowling.

The point is college has alot to do with what you make of it. You go to dick around then yeah you dont learn much of anything. The only reason engineering and medical degree are guaranteed to be beneficial is because there is way less wiggle room to dick yourself out of knowledge by being lazy. The lazy people in those usually switch to business majors or fail out.

Anyway, life likes to kick people in the nuts. It's up to you to get yourself the best nut cup to protect yourself.
