Default Does your society accept/acknowledge your hobby (anime and manga)?? - 05-31-2011, 11:40 AM

This issue is something that might have not been addressed (I guess so far I couldn't find one) and many of you might think its pointless (since this doesn't only apply for anime/manga obsession only) though I want some opinions about it.

Basically, I'm talking about as most of your hobbies are watching anime, reading manga, playing games etc, and the question is does your society accepts your hobby of these? like from family members, friends, colleagues, co-workers, strangers etc??

For my case, nearly 90% of people around me would not acknowledge my hobby since its "wrong" and "not trendy" but most of all, it is very childish and unethical to have this kind of hobby. Thus, for me I literally have to hide my hobbies from most of people I know since when I actually show them, they will ridicule me for having "bad" hobbies.
This is what I call discrimination I guess and especially if your an otaku or an anime fan, your pretty much will be looked down no matter which society you live in (Japan/Korea worst)

This type of stereotype is really common in any society. And what's worse is that, even if it doesn't hinders your social life and do what your suppose to do as a member of society (work, study, socialize etc), you still will be bad mouthed because of your hobby.

I mean, there are millions of other hobbies which some of them are really gay/worse though, it seems to me that Anime fans get the most hard time in any society.

Sure you can just say "Oh who cares about it... its our hobbies anyway... why the fuck we should care about others thinking??" but hey, we're living in a world where it is inevitable to escape from socializing with others unless you lock yourself in an basement. And even though you manage to keep your hobbies from others, someday they will find out and if that person is not understanding, than chance is that 90% of time she/he will drift away from you.

Moreover, the perception/perspective from others are extremely strong and vague when dealing with anime and manga etc. For example, if I show my friends a simple picture of something like this:

They would immediately say "Oh isn't that hentai??", "you got some weird shit there" etc... If you try to read manga in a public area or watching an anime on your iphone/ipad, you will get the "looks" from everyone, as if your an outcast... if you know what I mean...

This brings to another questions:
  • - Is being obessed with anime good or bad?? (This is not obsessed to extreme; only to point where you can control yourself)
  • - Out of all the other hobbies, why does anime fans get bad raps?

Argh, I think I dragged this little bit and sorry if I bored you though, its kind of interesting issue to address.

And also I brought this issue up because I've experienced the discrimination first hand and I would like to know what others think about it. Moreover, I study sociology and anthropology as my electives which we talk a lot about these kind of stuff and it popped in my mind (this issue) when I was working on one of my assignments.

People who discriminate anime watchers like us are just jealous because we find enjoyment..
Well, I think this is accepted by our society.. (IMO)
Being obsessed in anime is bad, you know the saying, "Too much something is bad"
Edit:
Another thought, maybe when some people here "anime" they think that it has something to do with pornography or whatsoever.. And that alone makes me pissed off >.<

They were having a misconception that some anime were considered as a pornography which is adding an insult to the injury. Not only from anime and manga but also I am also reading some visual novels, this can also be risky and adding prejudice to me, of being a pervert. I hate those people on what they judge you because of your hobby. One more thing, moderation is fine.

I think in my country, anime is just another cartoon for them like Tom and Jerry.

At least there, where I live, its acceptable, there's also shop which sells manga(USA imports), and I haevn't really seen anyone who'd discriminate my hobby. Still, I wouldn't reveal my whole visual novel collection... manga/anime=acceptable, but Visual novels=not really.

In my experience, nobody really cares that i watch anime. My family and friends know that i watch anime and they dont care. I guess i dont get any of the crap a lot of people get for watching anime or reading manga.

I think part of it is because of the fan base, anyone who's been to a convention or something similar, or visited the crunchyroll forums must know we do have quite a few weirdos as well as normal people, and sadly these are the people getting noticed, the guy in the naruto headband talking loudly about some hentai, or the yaoi fangirls going on about pairings, these are what normal people see as anime fans and this is where the bad rap can come from.

It also doesn't help when companies go down the "sex sells" route and start slapping ecchi covers on normal stuff and most models shops stock are the fanservicy ones since they figure that they're a safe bet because "sex sells".

Not many people where I am particularly care about my hobbie, but then again I don't bang on about it and only really bring it up when talking with someone else who's into it or when asked about it.

Recognized where I live? Definitely not.

Understood where I live? Definitely not.

Does my society (A small redneck town in Pennsylvania) accept it? Not a chance.

Do I care? Nope. Not one bit. There are quality shows that blow the pants off any normal shows on TV these days. I also walk around town singing Japanese music off my MP3 player and get the wierdest looks, but I don't care. I enjoy my life just like they enjoy offroad trucking and drinking.
